{"id":262526,"date":"2026-01-25T01:33:19","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:33:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/262526\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T01:33:19","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:33:19","slug":"there-is-a-degree-of-living-like-a-monk-but-a-fun-monk-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/262526\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018There is a degree of living like a monk \u2013 but a fun monk\u2019 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A few months ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chris-walley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/chris-walley\/\">Chris Walley<\/a> devoured the autobiography of one of theatre\u2019s original young offenders, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthony-hopkins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthony-hopkins\/\">Anthony Hopkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the slapstick physical humour with which Walley is associated is a long way from Oscar-winning Hopkins parts such as Hannibal Lecter, the Cork-born star was fascinated to read the memoirs of a fellow Celt who had likewise attended a lodestar of British theatre, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI loved Rada. I had a brilliant time there,\u201d Walley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hopkins had a different view, writing that he found it hard to fit in. (His raging alcoholism at the time, and tendency to brawl, probably didn\u2019t help.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI know a lot of people who maybe didn\u2019t and people who had different experiences of the place,\u201d Walley says. \u201cIt\u2019s very, very personal. Training differs greatly from person to person. I loved it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was my first time living away from home, and I was moving over to London. I didn\u2019t know anyone. It felt like an adventure I was going on alone \u2013 but in a great way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Walley is speaking from the British capital, where he has been appearing in a run of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2026\/jan\/11\/orphans-review-jermyn-street-theatre-london\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2026\/jan\/11\/orphans-review-jermyn-street-theatre-london\">Orphans<\/a>, Lyle Kessler\u2019s 1983 psychological drama about two brothers in 1950s Philadelphia trapped in a toxic relationship. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It marks the start of a busy 12 months for the 30-year-old. The Young Offenders, his beloved Cork-set comedy, returns later in 2026, and he will appear opposite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthony-boyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthony-boyle\/\">Anthony Boyle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roisin-gallagher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/roisin-gallagher\/\">R\u00f3is\u00edn Gallagher<\/a> in Skintown, a period piece unfolding in a 1990s Belfast nightclub. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He will also be shooting his debut feature, Covenant, a thriller set in Co Clare, produced by the actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jamie-dornan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jamie-dornan\/\">Jamie Dornan<\/a> with a script by Walley and his friend and fellow actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/frank-blake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/frank-blake\/\">Frank Blake<\/a>, \u201cabout two brothers and an event that changes their lives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/stage\/2024\/06\/02\/young-offenders-star-chris-walley-what-is-it-about-cork-i-dunno-thats-a-dangerous-question-to-ask-a-cork-person\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Young Offenders star Chris Walley: \u2018What is it about Cork? That\u2019s a dangerous question to ask a Cork person\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But for now Orphans has been taking up all his time, as you would expect with a dark, often violent work that Broadway World praised for its \u201cfast-paced aggressive slapstick\u201d. Walley describes it as \u201cparticularly intense\u201d \u2013 even more so than the 2018 revival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/martin-mcdonagh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/martin-mcdonagh\/\">Martin McDonagh<\/a>\u2019s The Lieutenant of Inishmore, for which the actor won an Olivier Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s no going out partying afterwards,\u201d he says. \u201cOn other jobs there has been. But I was younger then as well. I\u2019m still young, but I\u2019m 30. As you get older work takes priority. You don\u2019t want to short-change anything. And especially a play like this, it does demand a lot, because it is very intense, but also very fast. There is a degree of living like a monk, I would say. Having been initially rejected, he went home to Cork. As he pondered his future, he was surprised to be offered a part in an indie project by an aspiring film-maker who was bankrolling the entire \u20ac60,000 production cost out of his pocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was based on the real case of the washing ashore at Mizen Head of 1.5 tonnes of cocaine. In this new telling, two scallywags from the northside of Cork City pedal through west Co Cork hoping for a drug pay-day \u2013 only for their plans to go hilariously awry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The film-maker was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-foott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/peter-foott\/\">Peter Foott<\/a>, a director and producer of RT\u00c9\u2019s Republic of Telly, and the movie was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/the-young-offenders-review-hugely-funny-genuinely-sweet-irish-comedy-1.2792296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/the-young-offenders-review-hugely-funny-genuinely-sweet-irish-comedy-1.2792296\">The Young Offenders<\/a>. Walley and his costar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alex-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alex-murphy\/\">Alex Murphy<\/a>, another young Cork actor, played the not-so-dynamic duo of Jock and Conor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI had finished secondary school. I was doing drama and theatre in Cork, and there was an open audition,\u201d Walley says. \u201cI\u2019d done drama classes, but it was my first ever professional job. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was a baptism of fire. We\u2019re playing the two leads in this film that we really didn\u2019t know what was going to become of it. We didn\u2019t know if it was going to be seen. We were very green to the whole thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/the-young-offenders-review-hugely-funny-genuinely-sweet-irish-comedy-1.2792296\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Young Offenders film review: hugely funny, genuinely sweet Irish comedyOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The pair have both gone on to bigger things, Walley with his Olivier Award, Murphy playing an FAI flunkey in the new Saipan film. When they made The Young Offenders they were kids making it up as they went. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe were showing up on location shooting \u2013 there was little to no budget. It was wild. It was incredibly fun for our first job. And I also think it was probably helpful that myself and Alex didn\u2019t know any better. We weren\u2019t, like, \u2018This isn\u2019t how it usually is.\u2019 We were enjoying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Actor Chris Walley. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A few days in, as they journeyed into the wilds of west Co Cork, it dawned on Walley that The Young Offenders could be more than just another shoestring Irish indie movie. \u201cVery quickly on set, there was a feeling we were making something that felt special. Whatever was going to happen with that was in the hands of the gods. Thankfully it did take off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The critical response to The Young Offenders was glowing. (In The Irish Times, my colleague Donald Clarke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/mad-mary-and-young-offenders-take-galway-film-fleadh-by-storm-1.2717899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/mad-mary-and-young-offenders-take-galway-film-fleadh-by-storm-1.2717899\">wrote<\/a> that Walley and Murphy were \u201cbrilliant as track-suited layabouts who, though lazy, impulsive and ignorant, remain endlessly lovable\u201d.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Audiences shared the enthusiasm, and The Young Offenders took more than \u20ac1 million at the box office in Ireland. This encouraged the BBC to take a punt on Foott, Walley and Murphy with a spin-off Young Offenders series, which has chronicled the further adventures of Conor and Jock across four seasons and is now set to return for a fifth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The movie and the TV series are largely set in the working-class Cork neighbourhood of Gurranabraher. This isn\u2019t a world that Walley will have known first-hand. He grew up in the middle-class surroundings of Glanmire and attended the fee-paying Christian Brothers College, one of a handful of elite schools in the city. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cillian-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cillian-murphy\/\">Cillian Murphy<\/a> studied at another, Presentation Brothers College.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Given his comparatively well-to-do background, there is the risk that The Young Offenders might come across as punching down, yet it never falls into that trap. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEveryone from Cork loves Cork. Some of the best people, the best characters I\u2019ve ever met are Cork people. It\u2019s a very specific type of person, and loving person, that comes from Cork,\u201d Walley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s so much heart and humour and everything. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s difficult to depict those stories. It\u2019s kind of what we grew up with. I feel very fortunate to be able to tell them, and to be able to tell them with such humour and heart, which is really down to the creation that Peter made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jock and Conor are good people who do stupid things, he says. \u201cEveryone likes to watch people do stupid things. What Peter does so well is that you see them make the mistake, they learn and then they make amends. By the time the next episode comes out they\u2019ve forgotten, and they do it again. They\u2019re in this cycle of messing up, making amends, learning, and then they forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He grew up a few doors down from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eanna-hardwicke\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eanna-hardwicke\/\">\u00c9anna Hardwicke<\/a>, who is currently playing Roy Keane in the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/12\/25\/saipan-review-the-likeability-of-eanna-hardwickes-roy-keane-makes-the-big-meltdown-all-the-more-shocking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/film\/review\/2025\/12\/25\/saipan-review-the-likeability-of-eanna-hardwickes-roy-keane-makes-the-big-meltdown-all-the-more-shocking\/\">Saipan<\/a>. Glanmire is also the home of the actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sarah-greene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/sarah-greene\/\">Sarah Greene<\/a>, who babysat the infant Hardwicke and starred opposite Walley in the West End run of The Lieutenant of Inishmore. The Oscar-winning Murphy is another acquaintance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI got a Bafta breakthrough [award] a few years ago. Cillian was one of my mentors. I met him in Dublin for a coffee and a stroll. We hung out for the day and chatted about many things. Meeting him and spending time with him, he\u2019s incredibly decent and nice. He was very kind to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Acting commitments meant that Walley was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2024\/05\/10\/the-young-offenders-review-beloved-anarchic-comedy-is-back-and-as-sweet-as-ever-but-why-is-not-on-rte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2024\/05\/10\/the-young-offenders-review-beloved-anarchic-comedy-is-back-and-as-sweet-as-ever-but-why-is-not-on-rte\/\">absent<\/a> from the first half of the most recent season of The Young Offenders, to the detriment of the comedy. He\u2019s back for series five, however, and wants to be involved with it for as long as it airs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI love what that show has done for me. Everyone in it is like family at this point. And I would always have time to go back to do The Young Offenders. Of course, it depends what scheduling is for everyone.
