{"id":262540,"date":"2026-01-25T01:43:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/262540\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T01:43:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:43:09","slug":"mind-the-youth-mental-health-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/262540\/","title":{"rendered":"Mind the youth mental health gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PETALING JAYA: Cultural stigma and social expectations continue to deter young people from seeking mental health support, with experts citing awareness gaps and persistent misconceptions as key barriers.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysian Mental Health Association president Datuk Dr Andrew Mohanraj said the willingness to seek mental health support is often constrained by local cultural norms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our society, mental health issues are frequently associated with weakness, or even attributed to supernatural causes under certain cultural or religious beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>ALSO READ :\u00a0<a data-content-author=\"NA\" data-content-category=\"News\/Nation\" data-content-id=\"1800683\" data-content-sp=\"NA\" data-content-title=\"The hidden scars of cultural pressure\" data-content-type=\"Article\" data-list-position=\"1\" data-list-type=\"Paged Stories\" data-list-variant=\"News\/Nation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2026\/01\/25\/the-hidden-scars-of-cultural-pressure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The hidden scars of cultural pressure<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discourages open acknowledgement of problems and professional help-seeking,\u201d he said when contacted recently.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Andrew added that improving mental health literacy requires active involvement from institutions and associations to reduce stigma and expand awareness.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/apicms.thestar.com.my\/uploads\/images\/2026\/01\/25\/3736921.jpg\" onerror=\"this.src=\" https:=\"\" style=\"width: 620px; height: 2906px;\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaborative efforts by mental health non-governmental organisations and schools, such as workshops framed around child development and academic success, can go a long way in educating parents on how to identify mental health issues in their children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019 showed that one in eight adolescents aged 10 to 19, and one in 20 children aged five to nine, are estimated to have a mental disorder, yet many have not sought treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Psychologist Dr Anasuya Jegathevi Jegathesan said awareness of the seriousness of mental health issues is often clouded by parental attitudes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany parents blame the child for having a psychological issue, and that is the first hurdle we need to address,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that misconceptions held by parents often affect their willingness to seek therapy for their children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents sometimes believe their child is simply \u2018crazy\u2019, when in reality the child lacks coping strategies to manage the disorder. When a child is diagnosed with autism, some parents blame the child or assume it is something that was somehow \u2018contracted\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anasuya also said negative past experiences with counselling discourage some parents from pursuing professional help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are cases where individuals claim to be therapists despite not having completed a Master\u2019s degree and end up giving incorrect advice. Such incompetence can erode parents\u2019 trust in the effectiveness of therapy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that seeking external help can also be emotionally difficult for parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can hurt their pride as parents to accept that there is something they cannot help their own child with,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr Wong Yim Chan said education is key to challenging misconceptions surrounding mental disorders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial for parents to understand that when a child has a disorder, their brain functions differently.
