Jack Forbes \/ NY Post Design<\/p>\n<p>The research adds to the growing list of ways <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/gut+microbiome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">that gut microbiota<\/a> may influence human biology and health.<\/p>\n<p>The study also provides new evidence that doctors could one day treat or prevent certain kinds of mental health conditions by manipulating gut microbes given the understanding of the so-called gut-brain link \u2014 the two-way communication system between the digestive system and brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it\u2019s common knowledge that gut health is important to our overall well-being, exactly how bacteria that reside in our GI tract interact with one another and with our own cells to impact our mental health is still being uncovered,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/chembiophd.hms.harvard.edu\/faculty-staff\/megan-mccurry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said lead author Dr. Megan McCurry<\/a>, who conducted the work in the prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/hms.harvard.edu\/research\/blavatnik-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Blavatnik Institute at Harvard Medical School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis work reveals how certain gut bacteria perform a chemical transformation that produces a steroid that could impact women\u2019s health and postpartum depression,\u201d McCurry wrote in the 2024 study.<\/p>\n<p>Postpartum depression\u00a0is often a struggle mothers face following childbirth. <\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy yields a significant fluctuation in hormones (specifically\u00a0estrogen\u00a0and\u00a0progesterone) and this is accompanied by increased stress, feelings of being overwhelmed, sleep deprivation and anxiety, according to the research.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a serious mental illness that if left untreated by either medication or therapy, the condition can worsen into more perilous problems, such as postpartum psychosis, a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention and at times medication and hospitalization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gas up, new moms!
