In 1903 Waterford played host to the first St Patrick\u2019s Day parade, after a motion proposed by Waterford Corporation that March 17 become a national public holiday.<\/p>\n
That wish was granted, and ever since it has become a day of celebration in every corner of every county.<\/p>\n
To mark Waterford\u2019s incredible heritage, this year\u2019s theme, \u2018Waterford: Where St Patrick\u2019s Day Began\u2019, leans firmly into the city\u2019s unique place in Irish history. The festival will pay tribute to Luke Wadding, the influential Waterford-born Franciscan friar credited with formally listing March 17 as St Patrick\u2019s Day on the liturgical calendar \u2013 a decision that would eventually ripple across the globe.<\/p>\n
Waterford\u2019s festivities will be organised by Waterford City and County Council and EveryEvent, with the support of F\u00e1ilte Ireland, and will run from March 13 – 17.<\/p>\n
While full programme details are still under wraps, organisers are promising a festival that builds on Waterford\u2019s strong reputation for large-scale events. Parades and pageantry will form the centrepiece, alongside live music, cultural performances, festival fairgrounds and guided history tours celebrating the city\u2019s deep-rooted connection to the national feast day.<\/p>\n
Festival director Johnny Codd of Waterford City and County Council said expectations are high, but confidence is higher.<\/p>\n
\u201cWaterford has a great track record when it comes to festivals and events. We were the first to hold a St Patrick\u2019s Day parade, and this year\u2019s festival will not disappoint. There really will be something for everyone \u2013 from families and history lovers to music fans and visitors discovering Waterford for the first time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Community involvement is also being placed front and centre. Applications are now open for community groups, sports clubs, charities and businesses \u2013 big and small \u2013 to take part in the parade and help showcase the diversity and character of Waterford.<\/p>\n
John Grubb of EveryEvent said the parade is as much about participation as performance.<\/p>\n
