It was the first to be offered by a network provider, with Samsung offering a similar service via its Tocco phone.<\/p>\n<p>2015: Ireland gets new passport card for European travel<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/000a11c0-800.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe passport card was designed with those travelling frequently in mind<\/p>\n<p>Irish citizens could now travel within the European Union and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2015\/0126\/675641-passport-card\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Economic Area using a new Irish passport card<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Designed with frequent travellers in mind, the new card was issued as a supplement to existing passports, and those already holding a valid passport could apply.<\/p>\n<p>It brought a number of security features, including an embedded hologram.<\/p>\n<p>This Week In Irish Sports<br \/>\n1984: Lansdown Road gets a new stand<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/00116b60-720.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nThe new stand could hold 13,000 spectators, with 10,000 seated.<\/p>\n<p>Lansdowne Road (now the Aviva Stadium) got a new stand allowing more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/archives\/2019\/0123\/1025081-lansdowne-road-new-stand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rugby fans to see the boys in green<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new East Stand cost \u00a34 million and holds 13,000 spectators, 10,000 of those seated. <\/p>\n<p>Lansdowne Road was the oldest rugby ground in the world, and stood until 2006 where it was demolished and redeveloped into the Aviva Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>2023: Kilkenny side Ballyhale claim ninth All-Ireland title<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/001d36d5-800.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nEoin Cody of Ballyhale Shamrocks scores a goal for his club<\/p>\n<p>Ballyhale Shamrocks claimed its ninth AIB All-Ireland club SHC title success in Croke Park, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/sport\/hurling\/2023\/0122\/1350164-cody-sparkles-as-ballyhale-claim-ninth-all-ireland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beating Antrim\u2019s Dunloy Cuchullains 1-22 to 1-15<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The key player for Ballyhale was Eoin Cody, who helped himself to 1-05 from open play. While they eventually won by seven points, only a point separated them within eight minutes of normal time.<\/p>\n<p>Having fallen short the previous year and missing the opportunity to win three All-Ireland titles in a row, Ballyhale made up for it thanks to scores from TJ Reid, Paddy Mullen, Killian Corcoran and Colin Fennelly.<\/p>\n<p>This Week In Irish Entertainment<\/p>\n<p>2003: When Saoirse Ronan made her TV debut<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\" https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/images\/000a6b07-1500.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nSaoirse Ronan was 9 years old when she appeared on &#8216;The Clinic&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>At 9 years old, Saoirse Ronan made her TV debut playing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/archives\/exhibitions\/1862-before-fame\/770951-saoirse-ronan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">role of Rhiannon Geraghty in RT\u00c9 Television drama<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/archives\/exhibitions\/1862-before-fame\/770951-saoirse-ronan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> The Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She appeared in four episodes of The Clinic, and paved the way for a long career in cinema. At the age of 13, she was nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for her role in the film Atonement.<\/p>\n<p>1995: Pierce Brosnan begins life as the next James Bond<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/002228e9-614.jpg\"\/><br \/>\nGoldeneye was the first of four James Bond movies that Pierce Brosnan starred in<\/p>\n<p>Pierce Brosnan starts off life as James Bond at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/archives\/2015\/0122\/674773-pierce-brosnan-is-007\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a disused motor car factory in Watford, England<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brosnan was on the set of \u2018Goldeneye\u2019 marking his debut as 007, and starred alongside Sean Bean, Robbie Coltrane, and Izabella Scorupco.<\/p>\n<p>The former factory was 1.25 million square feet, and was transformed into multiple locations, including a miniature set of a Siberian landscape.
