reveals latest unclaimed estates in Swindon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The list has been published by the Treasury showing there are 25 unclaimed estates in town, likely to be worth tens of thousands of pounds.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  When a person dies without leaving a will and no family members come forward, the estate passes to the Treasury as ownerless property, often referred to as \u2018Bona vacantia.\u2019\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  These can be claimed within a 12-year deadline, before becoming the property of the Crown, though it is still possible for a person who is legitimately entitled to make a claim.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The surnames of deceased people in Swindon who have outstanding estates are: Cafferty, Caffrey, Cullen, Dancey, Davis, Deeks, Demello, Eggleton, Evans, Hughes, Kelly, Lynch, MacDonald, Marsden, Maschotta, Moloney, Moran, Nowak, Reynolds, Sloan, Smith, Sullivan, Udell, Walsh and White.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  An estate is classed as anything from property to personal possessions and money.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Official figures in 2021 revealed that there was \u00a377 million in total in unclaimed inheritance.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Treasury only advertises estates with a net value of \u00a3500 or above.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  There were 24 surnames listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk\/news\/24905059.treasury-reveals-latest-unclaimed-estates-swindon\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">last February<\/a> and only one of the estates has been claimed since then.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The government website contains more information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/make-a-claim-to-a-deceased-persons-estate#overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">making\u00a0a claim<\/a>\u00a0but advises people to gather up necessary evidence, including a family tree showing the relationship with the deceased and two pieces of identification.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Who can claim an unclaimed estate?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  If someone dies without leaving a valid or effective will, the following are entitled to the estate in the order shown below:\n<\/p>\n<p>  husband, wife or civil partner<\/p>\n<p>  children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on<\/p>\n<p>  mother or father<\/p>\n<p>  brothers or sisters who share both the same mother and father, or their children (nieces and nephews)<\/p>\n<p>  half brothers or sisters or their children (nieces and nephews of the half-blood or their children). \u2018Half \u2019 means they share only one parent with the deceased<\/p>\n<p>  grandparents<\/p>\n<p>  uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins or their descendants)<\/p>\n<p>  half uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins of the half-blood or their children). \u2018Half\u2019 means they only share one grandparent with the deceased, not both<\/p>\n<p>\n  If you are, for example, a first cousin of the deceased, you would only be entitled to share in the estate if there are no relatives
