(ABC News: Emmy Groves)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACT Environment Minister Suzanne Orr said the changes were the next step in developing the territory&#8217;s circular economy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we expect to see is less containers going into landfill and also less litter around our public spaces,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ACT scheme coordinator, Exchange for Change CEO Danielle Smalley, said more than 440 million containers have been recycled since the scheme started in 2018 \u2014 which is more than two out of every three drink containers sold in the ACT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We think the expansion will encourage more people to return their containers,&#8221; Ms Orr said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Indeed, the New South Wales government \u2014 along with the South Australian government \u2014 announced in September last year that a similar expansion of their schemes to include wine and spirit bottles <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-03\/wine-and-spirit-bottles-included-container-deposit-scheme\/105729040\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105729040\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">would begin by mid to late 2027<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Northern Territory government plans to make changes to their scheme by August 2027 with a two-year transition period, and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-15\/container-for-change-wa-wine-expansion-hits-small-business\/105763914\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105763914\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western Australia will expand its scheme in July 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canberrans have been promised a more lucrative &#8216;return and earn&#8217;
