{"id":266562,"date":"2026-01-27T13:50:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T13:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/266562\/"},"modified":"2026-01-27T13:50:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T13:50:13","slug":"he-made-a-big-difference-it-didnt-faze-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/266562\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;He made a big difference, it didn&#8217;t faze him&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">The Cork footballers are up and running in the Allianz Division 2 Football League after a topsy-turvy Round 1 game with Cavan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It had looked like that the visitors would emerge from SuperValu P\u00e1irc U\u00ed Chaoimh on Sunday afternoon with a win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They led by seven points before Cork landed the last eight scores with super-sub Steven Sherlock getting the winner after he pointed a two-point free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Rebels won on a scoreline of 0-24 to 2-17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork manager John Cleary was delighted with his side\u2019s game management especially in the final quarter when it could have been very easy to feel sorry for themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis team is fairly mature. We\u2019ve been on the road three, four, five years together and we\u2019ve been in this position before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4946897_9_articleinlinemobile_2876553-VR_TEK_0263.jpg\" alt=\"Cork manager John Cleary. Picture: INPHO\/Tom Maher<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe more experienced fellas, the likes of Ian Maguire, Steven Sherlock and others, they came on and got us over the line.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While it was a collective effort in the last quarter when the chips were down, the Cork boss had special praise for debutant Dara Sheedy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Bantry Blues forward came on in the second half to such great effect. His direct running and pace helped Cork reel in their opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIn fairness to Dara Sheedy on his debut, he made a big difference. It didn\u2019t faze him, he got on an awful lot of ball. There was a lot of pressure out there for every ball.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;He was getting on the end of every ball. I thought he drove us on there, particularly when Cavan got a bit tired.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cavan were excellent for the majority and ultimately they just ran out of gas in the last quarter. They had many impressive performers, none more so than Dara McVeety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He was named at centre-back but he played in the forward line. He scored 1-4, all from play, and Cork\u2019s inability to lock him down is something that Cleary will look at.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYeah, it is,\u201d the Castlehaven clubman replied when asked if it is disappointing that McVeety was on the ball so much.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/4945391_31_articleinlinemobile_3328370.jpg\" alt=\"Dara McVeety of Cavan is tackled by Matty Taylor of Cork. At times Cavan seemed to take over big time around the middle of the field, particularly Gear\u00f3id McKiernan.
