The PSNI<\/a> have appealed for witnesses to come forward following a shooting in north Belfast<\/a> on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

A man sustained gunshot wounds during an incident in the Strathroy Park area of Ardoyne.<\/p>\n

Cordons were put in place and officers remained at the scene on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The PSNI have promised a \u2018heavy presence\u2019 in the area as their investigations continue.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson said: \u201cJust before 8pm, we received a report that our colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were attending to a man with gunshot wounds in the Strathroy Park area of the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man, aged in his late 30s, was shot once to each leg and has been taken to hospital for treatment. Although his injuries are, thankfully, not likely to be fatal, they are severe and will no doubt leave him with lasting physical and emotional trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spokesperson added: \u201cLocal residents will notice a heavy police presence in the area. This attack has caused fear and disruption in the very community those responsible for this criminal act claim to protect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sinn F\u00e9in <\/a>MLA for the area Gerry Kelly has condemned the shooting.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI have been speaking to police and understand a man has been taken to hospital following a shooting in Ardoyne tonight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no place for guns on our streets. I call on anyone with any information whatsoever to bring it forward to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n

SDLP<\/a> North Belfast Councillor Carl Whyte said the community is concerned and upset following the incident.<\/p>\n

Cllr Carl Whyte said: \u201cThe shooting of a man in north Belfast tonight must be strongly condemned. This will have caused much concern and upset in the local community and left the victim with potentially serious injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe days of gunmen roaming our streets must be consigned to the past. There can be no justification for the use of barbaric violence of this nature.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is deeply concerning that those behind this attack are in possession of a deadly weapon and it must be seized and taken out of circulation before anyone else is hurt.
