But what happens when you take vitamin D pills daily for a while? Here are three potential benefits\u2014and one risk\u2014to keep in mind.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you\u2019re not getting enough vitamin D through food or sun exposure, a <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/vitamin-d-once-a-week-vs-daily-7484244\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">daily vitamin D supplement<\/a> may benefit your bones.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> When you ingest vitamin D, your kidneys jump into action and transform it into calcitriol, the biologically active form of the vitamin. According to Stanford Medicine endocrinologist and internal medicine physician <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/marilyn-tan\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marilyn Tan, MD, FACE, FACP<\/a>, calcitriol then promotes <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/calcium-8558241\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calcium absorption from the intestines<\/a>, which ultimately helps bones grow. Vitamin D also supports phosphorus absorption, which leads to bone mineral growth, she added.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you aren\u2019t deficient in vitamin D, however, taking extra vitamin D is unlikely to have a meaningful effect on bone health. A 2022 study found that healthy people who took vitamin D had no fewer fractures than those taking a placebo.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Another perk of taking vitamin D for those who don\u2019t get enough: better oral health. Your teeth, like your bones, rely on calcium to grow, and <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/mind-body\/vitamin-d-health-risks\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin D deficiencies<\/a> have been linked to poorer oral health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/dr-wassim-diab-md-facp-mha-1821245184\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wassim Diab, MD, FACP, MHA<\/a>, an internist and the vice chair of the department of medicine at Northwell Health&#8217;s Staten Island University Hospital, said that vitamin D also helps maintain a healthy balance of minerals in the body, which promotes tooth mineralization.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Low levels of vitamin D can also throw you off balance. In addition to weakening bones, deficiencies are associated with \u201c<a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/muscle-weakness-8416211\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">muscle pain and weakness<\/a>, increasing the risk of falls and fractures,\u201d Diab said.<\/p>\n<p>Research suggests that increasing vitamin D levels can improve balance, strength, and gait in people with deficiencies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> While rare, there is such a thing as too much vitamin D. Ingesting excessive amounts can lead to hypercalcemia, a condition in which there is too much calcium in the blood. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, impaired cognition, and dehydration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProlonged exposure can lead to serious complications, including kidney failure and potentially dangerous cardiac rhythm disturbances,\u201d Diab said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tan, hypercalcemia is riskiest for people with <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/condition\/kidney-disease\/what-is-chronic-kidney-disease\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chronic kidney disease<\/a>, which can affect the kidneys\u2019 ability to convert vitamin D to calcitriol, as well as those who have difficulty absorbing the vitamin. To promote absorption, she recommends taking the supplement, which is fat-soluble, with a fatty meal or snack.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For most people, however, especially those with a diagnosed deficiency, vitamin D is a low-risk supplement to take. \u201cModerate vitamin D supplementation under the guidance of a physician, including monitoring of kidney function, calcium levels, and vitamin D blood levels, is generally safe and beneficial,\u201d Diab said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A simple blood test can tell you if you\u2019re deficient in vitamin D\u2014something that\u2019s surprisingly common. In the United States, about 41% of people don\u2019t get enough of the essential vitamin.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For most people under 70, the <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/condition\/osteoporosis\/12-ways-to-get-your-daily-vitamin-d\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recommended daily intake of vitamin D<\/a> is 600 IU (15 mcg), which jumps to 800 IU (20 mcg) for older adults. It can be difficult to reach these goals because only a limited number of foods contain vitamin D or are fortified with it. Additionally, access to the sun\u2019s rays, which trigger vitamin D production, isn\u2019t always possible and comes with risks.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> While vitamin D deficiencies are typically asymptomatic in adults, they may occasionally lead to fatigue, muscle pain or weakness, bone pain, and mood changes, Tan said.
