{"id":269778,"date":"2026-01-29T08:08:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T08:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/269778\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T08:08:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T08:08:13","slug":"failte-ireland-spent-e60000-on-alcohol-for-visitors-at-two-tourism-marketing-events-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/269778\/","title":{"rendered":"F\u00e1ilte Ireland spent \u20ac60,000 on alcohol for visitors at two tourism marketing events \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/failte-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/failte-ireland\/\">F\u00e1ilte Ireland<\/a>, the State tourism body, spent \u20ac60,000 on alcohol at two trade fairs and \u20ac351,000 on food, as part of a marketing drive to woo international visitors to Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The hefty bar and food bills were run up at the annual Meitheal event in Killarney, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\">Co Kerry<\/a>, which is a \u201cface-to-face workshop\u201d between hundreds of Irish tourism industry figures and buyers from 15 countries. Meitheal is the Irish language expression for working party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Figures provided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-democrats\/\">Social Democrats<\/a> TD Aidan Farrelly show F\u00e1ilte Ireland spent \u20ac644,401 on Meitheal 2025 last April at the Gleneagle Arena in Killarney. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The event catered for 389 Irish tourism providers and 255 international buyers, with about 10,000 scheduled appointments and plentiful hospitality on the State\u2019s tab. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">F\u00e1ilte Ireland\u2019s alcohol expenditure at the three-day event was \u20ac34,152, a daily average of  \u20ac11,384. Food expenditure was \u20ac196,857 and \u20ac70,494 was spent on other drinks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The figures, set out by Minister for Tourism Peter Burke in reply to a parliamentary question from Mr Farrelly, show the cost of hiring the venue was \u20ac342,898. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">F\u00e1ilte Ireland spent \u20ac590,766 on Meitheal 2024 the previous year, including \u20ac26,219 on alcohol and \u20ac154,553 on food. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI absolutely accept expenditure is required to drive the promotion and development of our tourism offerings but value for money has to be always a consideration when it comes to hosting large-scale events,\u201d said Mr Farrelly, who is a member of the D\u00e1il Public Accounts Committee, the public spending watchdog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/central-statistics-office\/\">CSO<\/a> figures last year demonstrated a decline in some areas of our visitor numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">F\u00e1ilte Ireland said its hospitality and gifts policy sets \u201cstrict standards\u201d to ensure business event spending is appropriate, transparent and delivers value for money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The body said its Meitheal offering \u201cincludes lunches, coffee breaks and dinners delivered . . . while the tourism businesses are on site\u201d for the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFood and beverage expenditure forms part of the hospitality offering provided to international buyers and industry partners, and menus highlight Irish produce and suppliers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All told, in 2025 and 2024, F\u00e1ilte Ireland spent \u20ac94,012 on alcohol at seven events that each had more than 100 people attending. The food bill was \u20ac454,284 at eight events, one of which was alcohol-free. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition to Meitheal, these included the Conference Ambassador awards, the Employer Excellence awards, the Employer Excellence Exchange conference and the Ireland Golf convention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Burke said the golf event facilitates 1,500 meetings with international tour operators to attract golf visitors \u201cwho typically spend three times more than average tourists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Alcohol expenditure at the 2025 Ireland Golf convention was \u20ac5,544, with \u20ac20,640 spent on food. The 2024 alcohol bill was \u20ac4,648 and the food bill was \u20ac14,840.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Conference Ambassador programme \u201csupports individuals who bid for and host international conferences\u201d. The 2025 food bill was \u20ac18,875 and the alcohol bill was \u20ac9,204. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the Minister\u2019s parliamentary reply, the Employer Excellence awards \u201ccelebrate businesses who have demonstrated their commitment to making the tourism industry an appealing and rewarding place to work\u201d. The 2025 food bill was \u20ac15,395 and the alcohol bill was \u20ac5,125. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Employer Excellence Exchange conference aims to \u201chelp tourism businesses share best practice and learn from each other as well as leading experts on key workforce challenges and trends\u201d. The 2025 food bill was \u20ac5,996.
