{"id":273139,"date":"2026-01-31T04:44:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T04:44:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/273139\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T04:44:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T04:44:12","slug":"limerick-native-promoted-to-be-judge-of-the-circuit-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/273139\/","title":{"rendered":"Limerick native promoted to be judge of the circuit court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LIMERICK native and Clare\u2019s District Justice, Judge Alec Gabbett has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/1341\/jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">appointed<\/a> by Government to be a judge of the circuit court.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Gabbett is expected to take up his new role in the next number of weeks that will leave County Clare without an assigned district judge for a period unless the Government acts quickly to fill the position on a permanent basis.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Courts Service confirmed Judge Gabbett\u2019s appointment to the circuit court today.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Gabbett\u2019s promotion comes more than five years after the Limerick man was appointed a district court judge in November 2020.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/jobs\/1996303\/recruitment-firm-predicts-rise-in-new-vacancies-across-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Recruitment firm predicts rise in new vacancies across Limerick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Judge Gabbett first served as a moveable judge before being appointed Clare\u2019s judge to cover District 12 when he succeeded Judge Mary Larkin who retired in May 2023.<\/p>\n<p>During his time in Clare, Judge Gabbett heard cases across the criminal, civil and family law areas.<\/p>\n<p>District 12 covers courts in Ennis, Kilrush, Killaloe in Clare and Gort in south Galway.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Gabbett, aged 49, worked as a solicitor for 19 years before his appointment to the judiciary in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to becoming a judge, Alec Gabbett was a partner at Leahy Reidy Solicitors in Limerick.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected that an unassigned judge or judges will serve the district court in Clare before Government makes a full-time appointment to succeed Judge\u00a0Gabbett.
