Donegal Deputy Pearse Doherty says that families are being \u201ccrucified\u201d by the rising price of food.<\/p>\n
The Sinn F\u00e9in Finance Spokesperson made the comments after the Central Statistics Office released its latest set of EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) figures yesterday.<\/p>\n
According to the CSO, food prices have increased by 3.9% since January 2025.<\/p>\n
Deputy Doherty says that the price increases are \u201cnot sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFood prices going up at this rate is not sustainable. Ordinary workers and families are getting crucified,\u201d the deputy said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are hit hardest because they spend a large share of their wages just trying to put food on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey are getting it from every angle as the government has failed to end the rip-off and get prices under control.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople have been left struggling through the winter by a government that refuses to help.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cInflation has raced ahead of what was projected on budget day when the government decided to pull all cost of living supports.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFood prices still rising at a pace of 3.9% should be sending alarm bells ringing in the government. But still, we see no action.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe urgently need to empower the competition regulator to deliver far greater transparency in terms of both pricing and profits for food companies and large supermarkets.\u201d<\/p>\n
