Molly Ringwald might\u2019ve become a household name thanks to leading roles in John Hughes films like \u201cSixteen Candles\u201d and \u201cPretty in Pink,\u201d but the actor isn\u2019t lobbying for remakes of the coming-of-age classics anytime soon \u2014 and she doesn\u2019t think Hughes would be either.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, they can\u2019t be [remade] because they can\u2019t be made without the permission of [the late] John Hughes, and he didn\u2019t want the films to be remade,\u201d Ringwald told People<\/a> at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t think that they should be really.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Variety<\/p>\n But that doesn\u2019t mean Ringwald isn\u2019t open to new interpretations of the stories at the center of the iconic films. The actor noted that of all Hughes\u2019 films, the most relevant likely remains the 1985 cult-classic \u201cThe Breakfast Club.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like if somebody does something, I would prefer that they do something \u2026 that takes from \u2018[The] Breakfast Club\u2019 and then builds on [it], and represents this generation\u2019s issues rather than to try to recreate what was of a different time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Ringwald also mentioned she still sees her former castmates from time to time: \u201cI seem to see Jon Cryer the most, but I love them all. Annie \u2014 I love Annie Potts \u2014 and I see Andrew McCarthy from time to time \u2026 It\u2019s hard to believe that it\u2019s been 40 years [since \u2018Pretty in Pink\u2019 premiered],\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Hughes\u2019 films are widely considered to be defining works of the \u201880s. In 2009, the beloved filmmaker died of a heart attack at 59.<\/p>\n Ringwald was at Sundance for the premiere of her new film \u201cRun Amok,\u201d in which a 13-year-old high-school freshman, Meg, stages a musical reenactment of a shooting that took place 10 years earlier at the school.<\/p>\n Most recently, Ringwald appeared in films \u201cMontauk,\u201d \u201cPursued\u201d and \u201cThe Kissing Booth,\u201d\u00a0and television shows including \u201cFeud,\u201d \u201cRiverdale\u201d and \u201cThe Secret Life of the American Teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n Best of Variety<\/p>\n Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter<\/a>.
