The head of the mental health hospital was placed on temporary leave, Kemerovo region Governor Ilya Seredyuk<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfax.ru\/russia\/1070249\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> said<\/a> at a meeting with officials.<\/p>\n<p>Kemerovo\u2019s deputy chief of social development, Yelena Voronina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfax.ru\/russia\/1070246\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> all 13 mental health hospitals in the region, with nearly 4,000 beds total, would be subjected to snap inspections.<\/p>\n<p>The Investigative Committee, Russia\u2019s top investigative body, <a href=\"https:\/\/kuzbass.sledcom.ru\/news\/item\/2055472\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> Saturday that it had launched a preliminary probe into possible negligence and health violations at the Prokopyevsk facility.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, investigators\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kuzbass.sledcom.ru\/news\/item\/2057166\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0that staff at the mental health hospital had \u201ccreated conditions that led to the viral outbreak.\u201d It said three deaths have been directly linked to infections, while the cause of death of the remaining six was still being determined.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tnews<br \/>\n\t\t<a data-id=\"in-article-block\" class=\"related-article__inner\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2026\/02\/01\/kemerovo-region-governor-apologizes-for-blaming-newborn-deaths-on-mothers\" title=\"Kemerovo Region Governor Apologizes for Blaming Newborn Deaths on Mothers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tKemerovo Region Governor Apologizes for Blaming Newborn Deaths on Mothers<br \/>\n\t\t\tRead more<br \/>\n\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Regional health officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfax.ru\/russia\/1070274\" title=\"said\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0Friday that 28 patients at the mental health hospital in\u00a0Prokopyevsk were found to be infected with Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus, commonly known as Strep. Haemophilus influenzae can cause many different types of infections, from mild ear infections to more serious bloodstream infections.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the hospitalized patients <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/obschestvo\/26294001\" title=\"remained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remained<\/a> in critical condition as of Friday, officials said.\u00a0Eleven others were said to have been<a href=\"https:\/\/ria.ru\/20260130\/internat-2071148195.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0discharged<\/a>, leaving 51 patients at hospitals in Prokopyevsk and the neighboring city of Kovokuznetsk.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Seredyuk said the head of the mental health hospital in\u00a0Prokopyevsk is a person of interest in the police investigation and accused him of trying to obstruct the work of law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The Kemerovo region is now facing two health-related scandals.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, a judge ordered the closure of a regional maternity hospital following the death of nine newborns there in short succession.
