Color plays a central role in shaping a home\u2019s overall design style<\/a>, but deciding on a color palette that perfectly suits your space can feel like a overly complicated process. If you’re too safe with your selections, the look will be blah, but going overboard might result in a chaotic look. Luckily, interior designers have a tried-and-true solution. The 60-30-10 color rule is a method that helps create balanced, foolproof color schemes.<\/p>\n

At its core, the 60-30-10 color rule focuses on balance. The way it works is that 60 percent of a space is dedicated to a dominant color, 30 percent is reserved for a supporting shade, and the remaining 10 percent is used for an accent color. This ratio keeps a room from feeling overwhelming\u2014or, on the flip side, so understated that the colors barely register.<\/p>\n

More often than not, your primary color (the 60 percent), will be the color of your walls. No matter how big or small your space, those four walls take up the most square footage. Your furniture pieces<\/a> and larger decor accents like artwork will account for the 30 percent, and any soft goods like pillows and throws act are your 10 percent. Of course, these percentages can shift and swap\u2014it’s a customizable formula for a reason\u2014but this is the most useful starting point.<\/p>\n

60: While the patterns can make it difficult to identify a primary hue, the green ceiling and trim cement the hue as the focal point of the color palette.<\/p>\n

30: There are splashes of yellow all over the room, showing up in the lighting, bench, and drapery.<\/p>\n

10: Pink is the accent color in this bedroom. The bold throw pillow coordinates nicely with the wallpaper’s florals to tie everything together.<\/p>\n

With a monochrome color palette, think of the different tones of color as individual pieces of the puzzle. Take the above room, designed by Charlotte Lucas<\/a>, as an example: The pale pink is the 60-percent base layer, while the deeper shade is the 30. To round out the room, a deep, almost burgundy hue acts as the 10. A helpful hint is to work from lightest to darkest or vice versa. Designate the lightest or darkest shade as your primary color and work the formula from there.<\/p>\n

When to Break the 60-30-10 Color Rule<\/p>\n

If you find that it isn’t working, you can break the 60-30-10 color rule whenever you’d like. While it’s called a rule, this formula is merely a guideline for balance in a colorful room. It’s fine if you have 40 percent of one hue and only 20 of the accent. Two-color palettes are a great example of when the color rulebook can be thrown out.<\/p>\n
