\n\tA Grammy In Memoriam segment for both D\u2019Angelo and Roberta Flack<\/a>, curated by Lauryn Hill<\/a> and some of her musician friends, brought the house down with soulful performances.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring the D\u2019Angelo segment, Hill began by singing alongside D\u2019Angelo\u2019s vocals over their song \u201cNothing Even Matters,\u201d followed by Lucky Daye\u2019s rendition of \u201cBrown Sugar.\u201d Raphael Saadiq and Anthony Hamilton were next up with \u201cLady,\u201d with Leon Thomas following with \u201cDevil\u2019s Pie.\u201d The last stretch featured Transition with Vanguard BGVS performing \u201cAnother Life,\u201d Bilal singing \u201cUntitled (How Does It Feel)\u201d and Jon Batiste closing with \u201cAfrica.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor the Flack tribute, Hill and Batiste performed \u201cFirst Time Ever I Saw Your Face,\u201d with Leon Bridges joining Batiste to follow with \u201cCompared to What.\u201d Lalah Hathaway and October London followed with \u201cCloser I Get to You,\u201d with John Legend and Chaka Khan up next with \u201cWhere Is the Love.\u201d Hill covered the Flack song \u201cFeel Like Makin\u2019 Love,\u201d which D\u2019Angelo also covered, as the penultimate song, with Hill reuniting with her Fugees bandmate Wyclef Jean for Flack\u2019s \u201cKilling Me Softly with His Song,\u201d which transitioned into the Fugees version for the rousing end.<\/p>\n

\n\tD\u2019Angelo was a widely influential R&B singer-songwriter<\/a> who helped pioneer the genre of music known as \u201cneo-soul\u201d and is known for such hits as \u201cLady,\u201d \u201cBrown Sugar\u201d and \u201cUntitled (How Does It Feel?).\u201d He was a reclusive figure who released just three albums in a career spanning more than 30 years, but his influence on ensuing generations of musicians has been vast. His death from cancer last year at the age of just 51 came as a surprise even to many who had been close to him.<\/p>\n

\n\tFlack was a legendary pop\/R&B vocalist who was launched to stardom in the early \u201970s by the Grammy-winning hits \u201cThe First Time Ever I Saw Your Face\u201d and \u201cKilling Me Softly With His Song,\u201d the latter of which enjoyed a second life thanks to the hit cover version by Hill and the Fugees in 1996. The classically trained vocalist also enjoyed a string of hits with singer Donnie Hathaway in the early \u201870s, most notably \u201cWhere Is the Love?,\u201d and had a decades-long career after her charting years were over.
