Despite a huge night that included multiple wins, Jelly Roll made it clear backstage that he wasn\u2019t ready to wade into the political conversation, even as other stars used the moment to speak out.<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old singer was riding high Sunday night after taking home three awards, including Best Contemporary Country Album for “Beautifully Broken.” But when reporters backstage asked if he wanted to weigh in on \u201cwhat\u2019s going on in the country right now,\u201d Jelly Roll declined. \u201cNot really,\u201d he simply replied.<\/p>\n

Pressed further in the press room, the \u201cSon of a Sinner\u201d artist explained that he doesn\u2019t believe his opinion should carry weight in the current political climate. \u201cThis is the truth, and I\u2019m glad somebody asked,\u201d Jelly Roll said. \u201cI love talking about this stuff, and people care to hear my opinion, but people shouldn\u2019t care to hear my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to describe himself as largely disconnected from current events, adding, \u201cI\u2019m a dumb redneck. I haven\u2019t watched enough. I didn\u2019t even have a phone for 18 months.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jelly Roll expanded on that disconnect by reflecting on his upbringing<\/a>, explaining that politics weren\u2019t a regular topic in his household growing up. \u201cI grew up in chaos,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t even know politics were real until I was in my mid-20s in jail. That\u2019s how disconnected you are when you grow up in a drug-addict household. We weren\u2019t having conversations about rural politics. We were just trying to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the artist made it clear that silence won\u2019t last forever. \u201cI do have a lot to say,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019m going through it this next week, and everybody\u2019s going to hear exactly what I have to say, in the loudest and clearest way I\u2019ve ever spoken in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Jelly Roll has found himself under scrutiny for staying neutral on politics. Back in December 2024, the singer faced backlash after defending his decision to shake hands with Donald Trump<\/a> at a UFC event. At the time, critics accused Jelly Roll of signaling political support, a claim he pushed back on during an episode of his wife Bunnie XO<\/a>\u2019s “Dumb Blonde.”<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t grow up in a voting culture,\u201d Jelly Roll explained, reiterating that politics was never a central part of his upbringing. He went on to admit that his lack of political engagement was rooted in limited exposure and understanding. \u201cI don\u2019t know enough about politics to act like I know anything that\u2019s going on, what anybody\u2019s standing for policy-wise,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cI genuinely don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jelly Roll\u2019s restraint stood in stark contrast to several other stars who made pointed statements during the ceremony. Bad Bunny<\/a>, who won Best M\u00fasica Urbana Album for “Deb\u00ed Tirar M\u00e1s Fotos,” addressed ICE directly during his acceptance speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore I thank God, I\u2019m going to say ICE out,\u201d he told the audience. \u201cWe\u2019re not savage. We\u2019re not animals. We\u2019re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans.\u201d The singer went on to urge empathy, acknowledging how easy it can be to fall into anger during tense times.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the red carpet itself became a site of protest. Justin Bieber<\/a> and Hailey Bieber<\/a> made their first major awards show appearance in four years, wearing matching black outfits accented with silver jewelry and \u201cICE OUT\u201d pins fastened to their lapels.<\/p>\n
