With The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Francis Ford Coppola and his team created an example that generations of artists would follow with love and reverence.

When The Godfather Part III landed in 1990, it wasn’t afforded quite the same acclaim. While criticism can be directed toward the story and performances, the root problem was simply that The Godfather wasn’t built to become a trilogy. Still, a trilogy it became, and even with an inferior third installment, the story of Michael Corleone ranks among the most iconic movie sagas of all time.

In more recent years, however, The Godfather’s three-chapter tale has been rewritten, and that change is cemented further by the franchise’s presence on streaming.

Paramount+ Replaces The Godfather Part III With The Death Of Michael Corleone

Mary’s death in The Godfather Part III

Evidently agreeing with fans that The Godfather Part III had room for improvement, Francis Ford Coppola celebrated the threequel’s 30th anniversary in 2020 by releasing a new cut entitled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. This wasn’t the first time Michael Corleone’s swansong had been tweaked and tampered with, as the 1991 home release was also billed as the “Final Director’s Cut” and extended by around 9 minutes.

Nevertheless, the 2020 cut was broadly praised as surpassing the previous versions, albeit not quite enough to bring it on par with The Godfather and The Godfather Part II.

On February 1, 2026, the entire Godfather trilogy landed on the Paramount+ streaming service. Interestingly, there is no Part III, with The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone taking its place. This would seem to cement Coda as the true final movie in the saga, fully writing Part III out of history in a manner not seen very often with other director’s cuts.

The same thing happened when the franchise came to Paramount+ in mid-2025, but it’s now clear the omission was no one-off. The trilogy is officially: The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.

How Is The Godfather Coda Different To Part III?

Al Pacino as old Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part 3

Even before getting to the cut itself, using “Coda” instead of “Part III” has very different connotations. The retitle tacitly positions Coppola’s third movie as more of an epilogue than a proper third installment, removing expectations that it should be as grandiose as the first two films.

Scenes are edited to improve the pacing and shorten the overall runtime, while Michael Corleone’s meeting with Archbishop Gilday and the Vatican is moved right to the beginning, having previously come around 40 minutes in. This alteration gives The Godfather Coda a clearer narrative from the outset.

Perhaps the biggest edit is The Godfather Coda’s ending, in which an older Michael Corleone is shown miserable and alone in Sicily. The Godfather Part III originally concluded with Michael slumping over and dying in this scene, giving Coda the more ambiguous final shot between the two versions.

Is The Godfather Coda Really Better Than Part III?

Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III Coda Cut

There are clear advantages to making The Godfather Coda the definitive third movie – the Vatican scene, for example, definitely feels more at home after being relocated to the opening. At the same time, it could be argued that The Godfather Part III contained more detail, and that the slower pacing was more in keeping with franchise tradition.

The debate over which cut has the superior ending is entirely a subjective choice. The finality of Michael’s death really brings the saga full circle, but the pain of living on in grief can be viewed as the more brutal punishment for his sins. Some may prefer Coda, while others will champion Part III, but it’s rapidly becoming clear that only the former has a place in The Godfather’s official canon.

       Movie(s)

The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Godfather Part III

      Character(s)

Vito Corleone, Michael Corleone, Sonny Corleone, Fredo Corleone, Kay Adams, Tom Hagen, Connie Corleone, Vincent Corleone, Peter Clemenza, Salvatore Tessio

The Godfather remains one of the most astounding feats of cinema history, matched only by the fact its…

[27
93,61,60,270
0":"post-277713","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-movies","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-ie","10":"tag-ireland","11":"tag-movies
["GET
