{"id":278792,"date":"2026-02-03T16:43:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/278792\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T16:43:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:43:10","slug":"bbc-and-channel-4-could-merge-to-combat-youtube-minister-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/278792\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC and Channel 4 could merge to combat YouTube, minister says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The BBC and Channel 4 could be allowed to merge in an effort to take on global video streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix, a minister has suggested. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Ian Murray, the creative industries minister, told regulators that the broadcasters would benefit from \u201cdeeper and more strategic partnerships\u201d at a time when audiences are increasingly turning to on-demand platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said stronger alliances or \u201cconsolidation\u201d could help traditional channels reach harder-to-engage audiences and strengthen their long-term futures by using economies of scale in a rapidly changing, competitive market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ian Murray, Secretary of State for Scotland, MP Edinburgh South, wearing a blue suit and red tie, outside.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/59c3d226-e4b1-46f2-8853-c15cb6fd8b57.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">An Ofcom report last month found that YouTube has become the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/media\/article\/tragedy-for-traditional-tv-as-viewers-switch-from-bbc-to-youtube-fd6gr0vx2\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second most watched video service<\/a> in the UK, behind the BBC and ahead of ITV. The average Briton spends 39 minutes a day on YouTube, and among the over-55s it has nearly doubled to 11 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Sources in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) have indicated that ministers would stop regulators from trying to block any future deal between the BBC and Channel 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Historically, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opposed large mergers. The US company, which also owns Universal Studios, bought Sky for \u00a330 billion in 2018. The purchase of ITV\u2019s flagship broadcasting arm, including its TV channels and streaming service ITVX, would upend the British television landscape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Insiders hope it could encourage Channel 4 to attempt a merger with the BBC \u2014 speculation that has previously been denied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">DCMS has confirmed to The Times that \u201cany specific merger would need to be considered under the relevant legal processes\u201d.
