{"id":279113,"date":"2026-02-03T20:49:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T20:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/279113\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T20:49:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T20:49:09","slug":"how-to-know-if-youre-experiencing-ptsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/279113\/","title":{"rendered":"How to know if you&#8217;re experiencing PTSD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After battling depression and recurring nightmares for five years, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) late last year came as a &#8220;huge relief&#8221; for Louise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I was actually told in the beginning [by a doctor] that I had bipolar and situational depression,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>Family and domestic violence support services:Other resources that can help:<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wire.org.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WIRE:<\/a> 1300 134 130<a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victimsofcrime.vic.gov.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victims of Crime<\/a> (or your state or territory&#8217;s Victims of Crime service): 1800 819 817If you&#8217;re in immediate danger, call the police on triple-0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I was just like, &#8216;something is not right&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The 41-year-old&#8217;s symptoms started after she experienced a domestic violence incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The nightmares were constant, it wasn&#8217;t like a once-a-year thing, it was like once a week,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Louise, not her real name, says it wasn&#8217;t until she began working with new mental health professionals last year that they linked her symptoms to her trauma experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They said to me, &#8216;this is PTSD&#8217;,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I never really gauged that could be the case, I was just like, &#8216;oh, I&#8217;m just going through a thing&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What are the symptoms of PTSD?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Post-traumatic stress disorder is a collection of symptoms that may occur in the aftermath of a traumatic experience, says Professor Alain Brunet, the director of the National PTSD Centre at the University of the Sunshine Coast&#8217;s Thompson Institute on Kabi Kabi lands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;People who suffer from PTSD can&#8217;t help but think about the event,&#8221; says the clinical psychologist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So, it will recur in the form of unwanted thoughts, nightmares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They will also avoid places, people or conversations that may remind them of those events, and their whole physiology is in a fight or flight mode.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alain Brunet stands in a hallway \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/f2385779bbc755a2951917c3ebb5de96.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Alain Brunet is director of the UniSC Thompson Institute, National PTSD Research Centre. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackdoginstitute.org.au\/resources-support\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder\/signs\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Symptoms<\/a> can include:<\/p>\n<p>Re-experiencing the traumaAvoiding reminders of the eventNegative changes in thoughts and mood after the traumaFeeling &#8220;on edge&#8221; and overly aroused<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In the aftermath of trauma exposure, people are obviously affected by those events, but for a subset of people, those symptoms do not abate over time,&#8221; Professor Brunet says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you&#8217;ve had significant number of symptoms over more than 30 days, you are likely to be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Alexander &#8220;Sandy&#8221; McFarlane, an emeritus professor of psychiatry at the University of Adelaide, says in the case of PTSD, the traumatic event &#8220;gets stuck&#8221; in someone&#8217;s memory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Normally, memory is something that is vivid in the immediate aftermath of an important experience, but then with the passage of time, will fade,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The trouble for people with post-traumatic stress disorder [is that] these memories maintain their vividness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And they&#8217;re often not in a language form, they are the smells, the sounds, the intense emotions that people feel.&#8221;What type of trauma causes PTSD?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The illness has become one of the most diagnosed mental health conditions in Australia, affecting one in every 20 people over the past 12 months, according to Professor McFarlane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says there are many different types of traumatic events that can lead to PTSD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The most prominent cause of PTSD in the Australia is interpersonal violence,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2024-07-05\/doomscrolling-vicarious-trauma-gaza-israel\/104022894\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">When doomscrolling could lead to &#8216;vicarious trauma&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Exposure to traumatic content on social media can give some people PTSD. What are the signs to look for, and how can you protect yourself?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Sexual assault is another really critical issue in civilian community, [as well as] motor vehicle accidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then there are those intermittent, large-scale events like the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-16\/bondi-beach-terrorist-attack-maps-videos-explain-how-it-happened\/106145448\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106145448\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bondi terrorist attack<\/a> or bushfires and natural disasters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Brunet says there is an important factor that distinguishes PTSD from other common mental health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the case of post-traumatic stress disorder, you need to have been confronted with a life-threatening event or you&#8217;ve witnessed one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the red line between PTSD and other disorders like depression, anxiety or adjustment disorder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How to know if you have PTSD<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The National PTSD Centre offers a <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unisc.edu.au\/thompson-institute\/national-ptsd-research-centre\/ptsd-test\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">free online screening tool<\/a> for PTSD, but Professor Brunet says any diagnosis would still need to be made by a qualified health professional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He recommends booking an appointment with your GP if you have been experiencing symptoms for more than a month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Many people will try to just help themselves and think that they can overcome this by themselves, that is a very common reaction,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But it is time to address the stigma that is attached to consulting a mental health professional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This should be really a perfectly normal thing, and we should not be expected to deal with traumatic stress on our own.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Louise says she tried to deal with the symptoms on her own before eventually reaching out for help a second time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It can be really challenging but find someone who will listen and find that [health practitioner] who you gel with and just keep talking,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>What is the treatment for PTSD?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor McFarlane says recommended treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT) or eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those treatments really focus on the person re-engaging with the memory of the trauma and looking at the internal processes,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That might stop the person really holding it in their mind for long enough to convert into a verbal representation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a jacket and tie sitting inside an old, dark house\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3f07d57a790957007cff5055995d4485.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Professor Sandy McFarlane, director of Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies at the University of Adelaide. (ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says standard antidepressants may also help in reducing &#8220;reactivity&#8221;, which can make it &#8220;significantly easier&#8221; for the person to process the trauma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Brunet says the National PTSD Research Centre is also trialling a promising new treatment call reconsolidation therapy, which works to disrupt the reprocessing of traumatic memories by using a medication to help the brain process and update trauma-related memories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And so that&#8217;s the good news because there is a lot that can be done and people should definitely seek help, because effective treatments exist,&#8221; Professor Brunet says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says other experimental treatments such as <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-04\/veterans-with-ptsd-depression-may-soon-get-psychedelic-therapy\/104825752\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104825752\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microdosing psychedelics<\/a> still have a way to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u201cA small number of studies, sometimes with deficient methodology, small sample size and mixed findings, do not yet support the scaling of this treatment approach,&#8221; he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The cost-effectiveness of this very expensive treatment remains to be demonstrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Louise says while it was difficult for her to relive the trauma during her treatment, she is starting to see positive results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I haven&#8217;t had a nightmare \u2026 since I started the therapy, I&#8217;m sleeping better,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I have a better relationship with my children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;For the first time in a very long time I have hope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is general information only.
