{"id":280164,"date":"2026-02-04T11:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/280164\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T11:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T11:46:07","slug":"irish-mother-of-australian-boy-whose-four-hour-swim-saved-family-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/280164\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish mother of Australian boy whose four-hour swim saved family \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A boy aged just 13 has been credited with saving the lives of his Irish mother and two younger siblings after the family was swept out to sea off Western Australia\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Austin Appelbee swam for four hours, covering 4km to shore, to raise the alarm after he; his mother Joanne Appelbee (47), who is originally from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan; brother Beau (12) and sister Grace (8) got into difficulties on Friday, police said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Austin said he initially set off for help on an inflatable kayak that was taking in water. He abandoned the kayak and then took off his life jacket because it impeded his swimming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said he tried to focus on positive thoughts as he swam for around four hours through rough seas for shore, raising the alarm at 6pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe waves are massive and I have no life jacket on. I just kept thinking, \u2018Just keep swimming, just keep swimming\u2019,\u201d Austin said on Tuesday. \u201cAnd then I finally I made it to shore and I hit the bottom of the beach and I just collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Austin Appelbee:  'I just kept thinking: Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.' Image: ABC via AP\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3BSCY6Q34BMQUVKBSGMYVB557E.jpg\"   width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Austin Appelbee:  &#8216;I just kept thinking: Just keep swimming, just keep swimming.&#8217; Image: ABC via AP <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The family, from Perth, Western Australia, were on holiday and were using kayaks and paddle boards hired from their hotel at around noon when rough ocean and wind conditions started dragging them out to sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A search helicopter found the mother and two children wearing life jackets and clinging to a paddle board at 8.30pm, police said. They had drifted 14km from Quindalup in Western Australia after spending up to 10 hours in the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough \u2013 his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings,\u201d police inspector James Bradley said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Joanne Appelbee told RT\u00c9\u2019s Six One News on Tuesday she sent her oldest child for help because she could not leave the three children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Appelbee said it was \u201cone of the hardest decisions\u201d she ever had to make to ask Austin to swim towards shore to raise the alarm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She said she did not expect it to be \u201csuch a long and drawn-out process\u201d but that \u201cwe are all here to tell the tale, so that is the main thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Appelbee said she was \u201camazed\u201d at her son\u2019s bravery but added: \u201cI knew he could do it, he\u2019s that kind of child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was nothing short of a miracle that we made it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe had no food, no water, we were in plenty of water but we couldn\u2019t drink that. We fell in [to the water] so many times, the waves were so high and those kids just kept holding on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe kept singing, we sang about Moana. We were looking for dolphins to see if that could help us back in and when it got dark, that\u2019s when it really hit home, that we probably may not make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Appelbee said seeing the rescue team was the \u201cmost fantastic feeling\u201d and that she hopes to see her family and friends in Carrickmacross \u201cvery soon\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The children\u2019s grandmother has also spoken of her pride in Austin, his siblings and their mother.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Doreen Cunningham told RT\u00c9 Radio\u2019s Morning Ireland she had spoken with daughter Joanne but had not yet spoken with her grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m proud of the two boys and the wee girl. She\u2019s a very, very shy little girl. She doesn\u2019t like any publicity at all. The two boys are very good, and herself. It was great. Absolutely brilliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her daughter told her of her fears when Austin went to swim to shore to raise the alarm. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was a long, long time, it was four hours, and she was sure that he was drowned. She kept going and kept trying to keep the other two talking and singing and that sort of thing and praying of course, that was one of the main things and anyway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe tied the two children, tied the two of them together &#8230; and to herself. So they were all together.
