Ronnie O’Sullivan edged a scrappy encounter against Joe O\u2019Connor in the first round of the World Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Sullivan hit three half-century breaks on his way to a 5-3 win in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n

It was a day of upsets elsewhere with Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen losing a deciding frame to Ali Carter.<\/p>\n

The Antrim man led 3-1 at the interval but Carter came strorming back.<\/p>\n

A break of 86 clinched the match for Carter on a 5-4 scoreline.<\/p>\n

World number one Judd Trump was dumped out by Yuan Sijun.<\/p>\n

The Chinese put in a dominant performance, setting the tone for a 5-2 triumph with a 103 break in the opening frame.<\/p>\n

Former world champions Shaun Murphy, John Higgins and Neil Robertson all also exited.<\/p>\n

Murphy was soundly beaten 5-1 by Pang Junxu, Higgins went down 5-3 to Zhao Xintong and Jak Jones ousted Robertson 5-1.<\/p>\n
