{"id":281375,"date":"2026-02-05T02:53:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T02:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/281375\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T02:53:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T02:53:10","slug":"who-calls-for-mental-health-to-be-central-to-neglected-tropical-disease-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/281375\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO calls for mental health to be central to neglected tropical disease care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p paraid=\"1148988493\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{7}\">A major new World Health Organization\u00a0publication\u00a0sets out, for the first time, a practical, evidence-based package of care to address the mental health impacts of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and the stigma that can prevent people from seeking care and\u00a0participating\u00a0fully in society.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"1456753234\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{11}\">The Essential Care Package\u00a0(ECP)\u00a0provides governments, health leaders, and frontline services with clear guidance on integrating mental health support and stigma reduction into existing NTD programmes and health systems, including prevention, identification, assessment, management, and follow-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"691278775\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{13}\">With more than one billion people affected by NTDs worldwide, the\u00a0ECP\u00a0argues that progress towards elimination will be limited unless mental health and stigma are treated as a core part of disease management rather than an add-on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"615664463\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{15}\">\u201cNTDs take a far greater toll on mental and social well\u2011being than is often recognised,\u201d said Dr Daniel\u00a0Ngamije\u00a0Madandi, Director of the WHO Department of Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases. \u201cBy integrating mental health and tackling stigma head\u2011on, the Essential care package (ECP)\u00a0 equips\u00a0countries to confront the full reality of NTDs and move closer to WHO\u2019s vision of complete well\u2011being.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"1806276794\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{17}\">The\u00a0ECP\u00a0sets out clear, practical actions to integrate mental health care and stigma reduction into NTD services, with defined responsibilities across people living with NTDs, communities, health\u00a0workers\u00a0and system leaders. It calls for people affected by NTDs to be supported to recognise distress, know where and how to seek help, access peer support, and understand their right to health care,\u00a0employment\u00a0and community life. Families and communities are identified as critical to recognising distress early, supporting help-seeking, and challenging attitudes and behaviours that drive stigma and exclusion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"253336731\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{19}\">Professor Julian Eaton, Senior Lecturer in Global Mental Health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, said: \u201cIntegration does not work when it is treated as an extra checkbox for already stretched services. This package is invaluable because it sets out what good integration looks like in practice, from involving people with lived experience in service design, to routine screening and compassionate care, to referral pathways and peer support that reduce isolation and self-stigma.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"286982494\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{21}\">\u201cIf we want NTD programmes to succeed, we have to\u202ftake stigma and mental health seriously as part of meeting overall needs, not as a separate issue.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"1683293661\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{23}\">For frontline health workers, the\u00a0ECP\u00a0focuses on routine, compassionate, person-centred care. It recommends that mental health assessment and support are embedded within NTD services, including basic psychoeducation, screening and clear referral pathways to peer support, physical health\u00a0care\u00a0and specialist mental health services. Training is emphasised not only to build clinical skills, but also to reduce stigmatising attitudes within services and ensure that comorbid mental health needs are recorded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p paraid=\"751753091\" paraeid=\"{4d387490-a7e4-4597-bd7e-e3cafdc67206}{25}\">At a system level, the\u00a0ECP\u00a0stresses that integration requires coordinated planning between NTD and mental health programmes rather than parallel delivery.
