Clashes erupted in the D\u00e1il over the X \u2018nudification\u2019 scandal, as PBP TD Paul Murphy accused the Government of failing to act on the issue.<\/p>\n
During Leaders\u2019 Questions on Wednesday, Mr Murphy said he was not accusing the Government of condoning sexual abuse material generated on X and its AI chatbot Grok, but argued it did not want to deal with the scandal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not saying you condone the production of sexual abuse material, I\u2019m saying you don\u2019t want to do anything about it because you don\u2019t want to annoy or harm your relationship with big tech,\u201d Mr Murphy said.<\/p>\n
Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin described Mr Murphy\u2019s assertion as \u201creprehensible\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe idea that we would give priority to not standing up to big tech over the generation and sharing of child abuse material, it\u2019s an absolutely shocking and reprehensible assertion,\u201d Mr Martin said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow dare you, who the hell do you think you are? That you\u2019ve some moral superiority over everybody else.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Martin said all members of the D\u00e1il were \u201cat one\u201d in pursuing anyone who generates or disseminates child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the exchange, Mr Murphy claimed X misled the Government by stating that the ability to remove an individual\u2019s clothing through Grok AI had been disabled, following a meeting with AI Minister Niamh Smyth.<\/p>\n
He said anyone in Ireland could still access the feature via a VPN, and questioned whether garda\u00ed were directly investigating X itself, rather than only users who generated sexually explicit images and child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n
Mr Murphy cited the raiding of X\u2019s offices in France by the French cybercrime unit, asking whether garda\u00ed would take similar action in Ireland.<\/p>\n
Mr Martin said Ireland\u2019s prosecutors are investigating the matter, with 200 lines of inquiry under way.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do not interfere with the prosecutors in this jurisdiction, we don\u2019t interfere with the garda\u00ed,\u201d Mr Martin said.<\/p>\n
The Taoiseach said the European Commission is investigating X in collaboration with national regulators, including Coimisi\u00fan na Me\u00e1n.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no toleration of child abuse materials on any platform. There\u2019s no attempt by any Government to protect such proliferation of abuse material,\u201d Mr Martin said, citing the 1998 Child Trafficking and Pornography Act.<\/p>\n
Mr Murphy said the Government did not need to wait for the European Commission investigation, pointing to the Act\u2019s powers to take criminal action against X.<\/p>\n
