{"id":282134,"date":"2026-02-05T13:05:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T13:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/282134\/"},"modified":"2026-02-05T13:05:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T13:05:08","slug":"my-psychosis-got-so-bad-i-started-thinking-i-was-a-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/282134\/","title":{"rendered":"My psychosis got so bad I started thinking I was a God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SEI_263478721-2107-e1756290239660.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24009400\" alt=\"Cal Speet - the final comedown\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tAfter the mania came the madness (Picture: Cal Speet)<\/p>\n<p>When the medical team\u00a0collected\u00a0me from my mother\u2019s house in January 2015, I was wearing my dead grandfather\u2019s tasselled cowboy jacket with my bare torso exposed, a shoelace as a headband, and there was a smear of crimson blood across my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/08\/26\/nhs-staff-smear-fake-blood-call-15-pay-rise-13183528\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/08\/26\/nhs-staff-smear-fake-blood-call-15-pay-rise-13183528\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blood was fake<\/a>.\u00a0The out-of-hours team had not been called for a physical health issue, but a psychological one.<\/p>\n<p>I was 20 years old and had recently dropped out of the University of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/brighton-hove-albion-fc\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brighton<\/a> due to poor <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/mental-health\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Months of mania \u2013 fuelled\u00a0partly\u00a0by the stress of the perceived loss of my future and\u00a0partly\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/10\/30\/like-matthew-perry-weve-experienced-addiction-heres-what-to-know-19741395\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/10\/30\/like-matthew-perry-weve-experienced-addiction-heres-what-to-know-19741395\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by an addiction<\/a> to smoking enough cannabis to tranquilise Snoop Dogg\u2019s dealer \u2013 followed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tUnderstanding Time to Talk Day\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Time to Talk Day is an annual event in the United Kingdom dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and encouraging conversations about mental well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The day seeks to reduce stigma and promote openness around mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>The event includes community activities, social media campaigns, and resources to facilitate discussions about mental health.<\/p>\n<p>If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, support and resources can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/get-involved\/time-to-talk-day\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/get-involved\/time-to-talk-day\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After the mania came the madness.<\/p>\n<p>A sudden proclivity for tribal face paint, a repeated impulse to send videos of myself crying to my favourite authors and an obsession with<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/10\/11\/mum-goes-running-topless-every-day-but-its-for-an-important-reason-19645526\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/10\/11\/mum-goes-running-topless-every-day-but-its-for-an-important-reason-19645526\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> running half-naked around my town<\/a> at midnight\u00a0leaving\u00a0\u00a35 notes under plant pots meant that my \u2018I\u2019m not crazy \u2013\u00a0the rest of the world is!\u2019 mantra had worn\u00a0impossibly thin.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SEI_263478719-0b01-e1756290251650.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24009401\" alt=\"Cal Speet - the final comedown\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tIt was my plan to throw myself from the top of Stonehenge (Picture: Cal Speet)<\/p>\n<p>Like many who suffer <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/22\/wish-saw-denises-eastenders-psychosis-storyline-sectioned-20328372\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/22\/wish-saw-denises-eastenders-psychosis-storyline-sectioned-20328372\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from psychosis<\/a>, I had convinced myself that I was a god. A divine being sent to earth to stop a planet-destroying meteor by \u2013 wait for it \u2013 mapping the stars in the sky against the moles on my forearm.<\/p>\n<p>It was my plan to throw myself from the top of Stonehenge.\u00a0Instead of falling,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0sprout wings and fly off into the night sky to stop the imminent meteor, thus proving my recent deification and saving the planet in one fell swoop.<\/p>\n<p>I was resolute in my godliness. If I could be as depressed as I was after leaving university, sick and penniless, and turn\u00a0that depression\u00a0into waking up every day blissful, then I\u00a0must\u00a0be a god.<\/p>\n<p>I also blamed, in part, my recently adopted ritual of standing barefoot in the garden and staring directly at the sun for five seconds \u2013\u00a0a practice that I\u2019d thought was a forgotten <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/12\/08\/jan-ingenhousz-discover-photosynthesis-7142301\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2017\/12\/08\/jan-ingenhousz-discover-photosynthesis-7142301\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">form of photosynthesis<\/a> \u2013\u00a0for my perceived anointment (in reality, it was burning my corneas and I now have astigmatism).<\/p>\n<p>In the end, it was the\u00a0restorative power of friendship\u00a0that saved me<\/p>\n<p>Quote<br \/>\nQuote<\/p>\n<p>Obviously,\u00a0I hadn\u2019t been anointed. I wasn\u2019t happy, I was high on\u00a0cannabis and\u00a0psychosis-delivered dopamine.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s a lot easier to cope with newfound divinity than with the truth:\u00a0That\u00a0I was unemployed, uneducated and having a very <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/03\/31\/mental-breakdown-taught-enjoy-living-slowly-12484272\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2020\/03\/31\/mental-breakdown-taught-enjoy-living-slowly-12484272\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public mental breakdown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My mother decided to call our local GP to inform them of my erratic behaviour. They arranged an immediate home visit. After an assessment, the medical team persuaded me to take anti-psychotics with the argument: \u2018If what you\u2019re experiencing is real, taking medicine won\u2019t stop it, will it?\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But it did\u00a0stop it.<\/p>\n<p>After taking my prescription, the descent back down to earth began with a slight gradient over the first few days, before plummeting harshly.<\/p>\n<p>I became utterly sedate. Then bedbound. Then almost comatose.<\/p>\n<p>I had <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/05\/24\/i-dont-think-ill-ever-be-cured-of-my-depression-but-i-still-live-a-good-life-18829270\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/05\/24\/i-dont-think-ill-ever-be-cured-of-my-depression-but-i-still-live-a-good-life-18829270\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experienced depression<\/a> before, but this new version \u2013 the lowest low after the highest high \u2013\u00a0was a different beast entirely.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/SEI_263478649-da54-e1756290318504.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24009392\" alt=\"Cal Speet - the final comedown\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tMy friends reached\u00a0out repeatedly, only for me to swat them away (Picture: Cal Speet)<\/p>\n<p>I lost the ability to perceive, think and feel. My internal monologue was silent, and, to add insult to injury, due to post-psychosis amnesia, a common side-effect of the illness, I had <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/02\/07\/i-fell-back-in-love-with-my-partner-every-day-after-losing-my-memory-18236106\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/02\/07\/i-fell-back-in-love-with-my-partner-every-day-after-losing-my-memory-18236106\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost all of my memories<\/a>, too<\/p>\n<p>The only feeling that remained in the bleakness was a dull, underlying terror. Who was I? I hadn\u2019t showered\u00a0or left bed\u00a0in a week. Matching clothes. Clean hair. Makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Without hesitation, she climbed into my pit next to me. She said she wanted to be there, that she missed me, and knew I\u2019d be better soon. She tucked herself in underneath the dirty bedsheets and played old Sex and the City episodes on the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I couldn\u2019t enjoy her company; but she persisted.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of weeks, I laughed. She reminded me that, in my madness, I\u2019d stolen a plasma ball from Home Bargains and was convinced I could use it as a communication device to chat <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/16\/nicki-minaj-szas-feud-explained-shocking-dead-dog-dig-23677511\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/07\/16\/nicki-minaj-szas-feud-explained-shocking-dead-dog-dig-23677511\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with Nicki Minaj<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We howled. Bit by bit, my memories returned and my humanity trickled back.<\/p>\n<p>I started showering. I reached out to all my other friends. I got a job.<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, not only did the intense post-psychosis depression dissipate, but so did the pre-psychosis, low-level depression that had haunted me since my teenage years.<\/p>\n<p>There is a hard line in my life between who I was before and after this period.
