When announcing that it would pull Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s programme<\/a>, TV station operator Nexstar Communications Group called comments the comedian had made about Charlie Kirk<\/a>\u2019s death \u201coffensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Supporters of US<\/a> president Donald Trump<\/a> have praised the decision, with the White House deputy chief of staff calling it an example of \u201cconsequence culture\u201d.<\/p>\n

But what did Mr Kimmel actually say that raised the ire of the president\u2019s Maga movement?<\/p>\n

During his Monday evening monologue, Mr Kimmel suggested Kirk\u2019s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, might have been a pro-Trump Republican.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Maga Gang [is] desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,\u201d Mr Kimmel said.<\/p>\n

It appears this was the comment that most angered Trump supporters and officials.<\/p>\n

In an interview earlier on Wednesday, the Trump-appointed head of the US media regulator, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), said it appeared to be a \u201cconcerted effort to try to lie to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brendan Carr went on to call Mr Kimmel\u2019s comments an attempt to \u201cplay into a narrative that this was somehow a Maga or Republican motivated person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Carr went on to threaten that if action were not taken against Kimmel, there would be \u201cadditional work for the FCC ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s long past the time that a lot of these licenses broadcasters themselves … say \u2018We\u2019re not gonna run Kimmel any more … because we licensed broadcasters are running the possibly of fines or licensed revocation from the FCC\u2019,\u201d Mr Carr said.<\/p>\n

Democratic senator Ed Markey called it \u201ccensorship in action\u201d.<\/p>\n

The \u201cFCC chair threatens ABC and Disney over Kimmel\u2019s comments. Hours later, he\u2019s off air. It\u2019s dangerous and unconstitutional. The message to every media company is clear: Adopt the Maga line or the Federal Censorship Commission will come after you,\u201d Mr Markey said.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel also mentioned reaction to the death of Kirk on his Tuesday programme as well, saying \u201cmany in Maga-land are working very hard to capitalise on the murder of Charlie Kirk\u201d.<\/p>\n

Referencing vice-president JD Vance\u2019s comment while guest-hosting Kirk\u2019s podcast, Mr Kimmel said \u201cthe president and his henchmen are doing their best to fan the flames, so they can I guess attack people on the dangerous left\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter has said that Mr Kimmel was preparing to address the backlash on Wednesday night\u2019s show and show how his comments had been taken out of context.
