French media criticism of Ireland has been persistent ever since, particularly online, where accusations of cynical and deliberate foul play have been levelled at Tadhg Beirne and Andrew Porter in particular.

Against that backdrop came an uncomfortable moment in the post match press conference when Ireland captain Caelan Doris was faced with a fairly loaded question from a French journalist referencing two late incidents involving James Ryan.

As the match entered its closing stages, Ryan was involved in a marginally late hit on French out half Matthieu Jalibert in the 75th minute. An incident the French TV directors wasted no time in replaying on the big screen. The home crowd displayed their disappointment in no uncertain terms as their star fly half lay on the ground clutching his ribs.

Ryan followed it up by making forceful contact with Anthony Jelonch as the French back row stood on the Irish side of a breakdown in the 80th minute. In the eyes of the of certain sections of the French media this was yet another example of an Irish side who resort to cheap shots and underhanded tactics.

Awkward Exchange Between Caelan Doris And French Reporter After Defeat

        Recommended

A visibly disappointed Andy Farrell fielded questions from Irish reporters before the French media turned to Doris. “Here we saw two or three nasty fouls at the end of the game,” the reporter began, asking whether Ireland felt wounded in pride and how they would react in their next fixture against Italy.

Caelan Doris initially appeared genuinely confused by the framing of the question, asking for clarification more than once.

Say again? Nasty fouls? Is that what you said?

Once the intent of the question became clear, Doris chose not to engage with the premise at all. Rather than address individual incidents or players, the Ireland captain pivoted back to the broader picture of the game itself.

I think the bench made a good impact. Faz alluded to it there. There was some good resolve in the second half, but we do not want to be a team that is chasing.

Notably, Doris made no personal reference to Ryan or the incidents in question, instead offering a frank assessment of Ireland’s performance and why the contest had already slipped away long before the final minutes.

We left ourselves too big a mountain to climb. That is down to some passiveness in defence, not being connected, not being dominant in collisions, allowing them to flourish with keeping the ball alive in attack.

By the time he finished answering, there was a clear sense that Caelan Doris was keen to move on from the question and presumably from Paris itself.

The exchange will do little to alleviate any ill will on the part of French supporters but on a night when Ireland’s dominant tackle percentage was a harrowing 3.4%, many fans would likely have welcomed Ryan’s actions, even if they did teeter on the edge of potential foul play.

Ireland now return to Dublin to face Italy, with far more pressing issues to address than late game flashpoints. A tough night on and off the pitch for the Irish captain.

SEE MORE: Ireland XV v England A: How To Watch, TV Info And Team News

There has been an unmistakable edge to France vs Ireland in recent years, and that tension followed Ireland…

[9
61,60,112
0":"post-284734","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-sports","8":"tag-ie","9":"tag-ireland","10":"tag-sports
["GET
