{"id":285959,"date":"2026-02-07T16:48:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T16:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/285959\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T16:48:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T16:48:13","slug":"we-asked-a-doctor-if-saturated-fat-is-actually-good-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/285959\/","title":{"rendered":"We Asked a Doctor If Saturated Fat Is Actually Good for You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans have sparked controversy over their recommendations for foods high in saturated fat, while maintaining a saturated fat limit of 10% of total daily calories.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> This contradictory guidance has left many Americans with more questions than answers, so we turned to our chief medical officer, Sohaib Imtiaz, MD, to clear up the confusion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Q:\u00a0The new dietary guidelines call out full-fat milk, butter, and beef tallow as sources of &#8220;healthy fats,&#8221; but these options are pretty high in saturated fat. Is saturated fat good for you?\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Imtiaz: There&#8217;s nothing wrong with full-fat milk if you have it in normal amounts, but for people who are already eating too many calories, that will push them into gaining more weight and getting obesity and all the risks that come with that.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The American Heart Association says dairy fat may be slightly less harmful than other saturated fat sources (i.e., those with more <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/which-foods-contain-trans-fats-697735\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trans fat<\/a>), but it&#8217;s far less beneficial than plant-based fats, especially polyunsaturated fatty acids.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But the problem with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/dietary-guidelines-whats-new-11891228\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">guidelines<\/a> is that they don&#8217;t emphasize <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/healthy-fats-7498653\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plant-based and seafood fat sources<\/a> for greater health benefits over animal sources like steak and butter. This might encourage people to go out and have more steaks and butter,\u00a0which we know is going to increase their cardiometabolic risk and risk of heart disease.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The guidelines say we should limit <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/which-foods-are-high-in-saturated-fat-697745\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">saturated fat<\/a> to 10% of our daily calories, but also recommend beef tallow as a healthy fat. But beef tallow contains about 50% saturated fatty acids. If you follow a 2,000-calorie diet, eating two tablespoons of beef tallow will put you close to the daily limit.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> On the other hand, <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/foods-that-are-high-in-unsaturated-fats-697736\" link-destination-recommendation=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unsaturated fats<\/a> like olive oil, nuts, and fish provide cardiovascular protection, so they should have been highlighted much more in the guidelines.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> We know that replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats reduces cardiovascular risk. So that&#8217;s what should be emphasized, not just &#8220;Hey, take fats instead of carbs,&#8221; because it puts carbs at the bottom and demonizes carbs.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_21-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> When your fat intake goes up considerably, your calorie intake will also go up.
