Here, experts discuss whether vibration plates actually deliver results or are just another over-hyped fitness fad.

What is a vibration plate, exactly?

Vibration plates are devices that feature a low platform and an electric motor, which stimulates whole-body vibration when you stand, sit, or otherwise place part of your body on the machine. (Some also feature a front column with handles for support.)

They typically vibrate at high frequencies (30 to 50 times per second) measured in hertz, says Tiffany Angulo Ragozzino, a certified group fitness instructor and physical education and health teacher as well as the founder of Pretty Little Lifters. This “forces your muscles to rapidly contract and relax to maintain stability,” she explains.

Do all vibration plates work the same way?

No, there are distinct two types of vibration plates or movement patterns:

Oscillating vibration plates move side to side, creating a seesaw effect that mimics natural gait patterns, explains Hana Ivandic, a certified personal trainer, health coach, and lymphatic therapy expert. “Side-to-side oscillation creates alternating load through the hips and legs,” says Ivandic. “This generally feels smoother and less jarring than vertical vibration, which makes them more accessible for beginners.” Oscillating vibration patterns also have “a lower likelihood of joint irritation, excessive muscle tension, or nervous system stress,” making this a good choice for older folks, too, she adds.

Linear vibration plates move up and down and generally deliver a higher intensity. This pattern can be useful for athletes or those using vibration plates for fitness because it can increase muscle recruitment, strength output, and power when paired with strength training or specific performance-based movements, explains Ivandic.

Neither type is “better” universally—the ideal vibration plate depends on the person, their fitness goals, and how they use the plate, says Ivandic.

urbazon//Getty Images

What are the benefits of vibration plates?

You don’t have to be a moon-lander or an elite athlete to try vibration therapy, but you do want to be sure your expectations align with reality. Before you hop on one and start pulsing, here’s the truth about some of the most common vibration plate fitness benefits being discussed today.

The claim: Burn fat and lose weight

THE TRUTH: Vibration plates don’t burn enough calories on their own to accelerate weight loss, says Angulo Ragozzino. “While vibration plates cause your muscles to contract, the energy required to do so is minimal—comparable to a slow walk,” she says. (Learn more about calories burned during walking.) “Vibration plates don’t raise your heart rate enough to trigger significant fat burning or cardiovascular conditioning. Fat loss requires a calorie deficit, which this machine alone cannot create. The number on the scale can shift due to other factors, such as water weight or muscle mass. Similarly, you can reduce your total body fat while maintaining or even increasing your total body weight. This, in turn, could lead to better muscle recruitment during strength training, which builds muscle strength, stamina, and mass over time.

Simply put, “vibration plate training is less effective than traditional resistance training for building muscle,” says Angulo Ragozzino. To truly build muscle, focus on lifting weights that feel challenging and progressively pushing your limits on load, reps, or time, she says.

Grace Cary

The claim: Promote exercise recovery

THE TRUTH: This is a situation in which vibration plates can really help. If you’ve ever used a massage gun, then you know the healing power of vibration on achy muscles. Vibration plates work in a similar way—without the percussion-like pressure, says Angulo Ragozzino.

Via rapid, involuntary muscle contractions, vibration plates boost blood flow to your muscles, which helps flush out byproducts such as lactic acid (the major cause of soreness) and release tension. “Using them for five to 10 minutes after a workout can help remove lactic acid, increase oxygen delivery to tissues, and potentially aid in faster, more comfortable recovery,” explains Angulo Ragozzino.

The claim: Enhance stability

THE TRUTH: Vibration plates may improve balance, particularly in seniors and those with limited mobility. One study published in Frontiers found that folks saw the most balance improvement when older folks used the plates on higher frequency settings. Another study from 2017 showed that whole-body vibration also improved functional movement patterns, such as going from sitting to standing, in older adults who used the devices for eight weeks.

“The movement happening while on the plate forces your stabilizer muscles—specifically in your core and ankles—to constantly micro-adjust, strengthening the neural pathways used for balance,” explains Angulo Ragozzino.

The claim: Improve bone density

THE TRUTH: Vibration plates can be a beneficial part of a larger effort to strengthen bones, but they probably won’t get the job done on their own. The theory is that “small mechanical changes can stimulate enough of a stressor to elicit hormone fluctuations that contribute to adaptations and improvements in overall bone mass with less load on joint structures than traditional resistance training,” says Milton. Essentially, these micro-movements from a vibration plate may mimic the bone-building of high-impact exercises like running without the same damage risks.

However, the largest benefits are typically seen in those who already have a deficiency, explains Milton. For instance, a 2023 research review article looked at previous studies on whether whole-body vibration could help seniors and postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and found that vibration may have merit as part of a collective approach to bone-building (i.e., in addition to medication and diet changes), but there was uncertainty about its validity as a stand-alone intervention.

“If someone is looking to improve their bone density, a vibration plate is not going to be the most effective tool,” echoes Angulo Ragozzino. “You’d get more from weight-bearing and resistance exercises, [such as] walking, jogging, [or] jumping, and adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.”

The claim: Promote lymphatic drainage

THE TRUTH: It can support other efforts to improve lymphatic drainage, such as exercise and breathwork. Lymphatic drainage refers to the process by which the lymphatic system removes excess fluid that accumulates in the interstitial space between all cells in your body—think, between organs, blood streams, etc., says Milton. “Yes, our bodies do this on their own, but if you’re sedentary and have a low metabolism, it does it less,” she says.

The lymphatic system doesn’t have a “pump” (i.e., the heart in the cardiovascular system), so it requires external stimuli to trigger movement, says Ivandic. “Movement and breathing create natural pressure changes and muscle contractions that actively move blood and lymph,” she explains. “Vibration amplifies these effects but is far less effective on its own.”

Who should (and shouldn’t) use vibration plates?

Research on vibration therapy has largely focused on older adults, people with physical limitations, or niche groups, so if you fall into a population that’s been studied with success, you may find vibration plates are more beneficial than healthy, able-bodied folks. “People with sedentary lifestyles, poor circulation, lymphatic stagnation, joint limitations, or those returning to movement after injury often benefit most,” says Ivandic. It may also be a good choice if you’re a fan of low-impact workouts, as it’s a joint-friendly tool when used appropriately.

Most people who already have a workout routine can safely use vibration plates, but there are some exceptions. If you’re pregnant, experiencing acute inflammation (such as a new injury), have recently undergone surgery, have cardiovascular issues, certain neurological conditions (such as a seizure disorder), or an implanted medical device (such as a pacemaker), you should avoid using a vibration plate unless your doctor has cleared it, according to our experts.

“As with most wellness tools, personalization and professional guidance matter,” says Ivandic.

How to use a vibration plate

If you want to hop on the vibration plate trend, here are a few tips to help you utilize the machine:

Start with a lower intensity and increase it gradually.

“Vibration is a stimulus, so dosage matters,” says Ivandic. A common mistake people make is using a high-frequency vibration for too long, she says. This can backfire by actually creating more stress or inflammation in the body. Start with low intensity and short intervals, such as 30- to 60- second bursts at a time, totaling five to 10 minutes.

“Intensity can be increased gradually, but longer sessions are rarely necessary to see benefits,” says Ivandic.
