That\u2019s some biblical wisdom that TD Eoin Hayes may be meditating on as the shares he liquidated on entering politics continue to soar in value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Overheard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/18\/overheard-edna-obrien-talked-about-a-book-burning-of-the-country-girls-in-rural-clare-but-did-it-actually-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/08\/18\/overheard-edna-obrien-talked-about-a-book-burning-of-the-country-girls-in-rural-clare-but-did-it-actually-happen\/\">revealed in September 2024<\/a> that the Social Democrats newbie had recently sold his shares in software company Palantir, as recorded in his Dublin City Council ethics declaration. He later \u2013 after his election to the D\u00e1il \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/12\/10\/social-democrats-td-sold-shares-in-us-supplier-to-israeli-military-a-month-after-taking-council-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2024\/12\/10\/social-democrats-td-sold-shares-in-us-supplier-to-israeli-military-a-month-after-taking-council-seat\/\">landed himself in trouble<\/a> over the timing of his divestment and spent a period in party political Siberia as penance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company was controversial at the time primarily because the Israel Defense Forces used its technology to select targets in Gaza. The contrite Hayes eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/31\/eoin-hayes-readmittance-by-social-democrats-a-bid-to-put-an-end-to-difficult-question-for-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/07\/31\/eoin-hayes-readmittance-by-social-democrats-a-bid-to-put-an-end-to-difficult-question-for-party\/\">returned to the Soc Dem fold<\/a>, but what has Palantir been up to? Maximising shareholder value, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/99fdde76-a545-4a31-b1bb-0034a4e902f0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/99fdde76-a545-4a31-b1bb-0034a4e902f0\"> a report in the Financial Times<\/a>. While Europeans show \u201creal hesitance\u201d to adopt its wares, the company\u2019s chief executive, Alex Karp, hailed an \u201cincreasingly discerning\u201d set of US customers for the modern tech business with the fantasy name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among them is US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice), the immigration enforcement force deployed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/30\/on-the-streets-of-minneapolis-ice-agents-are-like-this-invisible-goon-squad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/30\/on-the-streets-of-minneapolis-ice-agents-are-like-this-invisible-goon-squad\/\">most notoriously to Minneapolis<\/a>. It has $81 million in contracts with Palantir, the FT said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It is boom time for the share price. Hayes sold up in July 2024, with shares hovering below $30 at the time. This week they were more than $150 at times. Photograph: Dave Meehan Dunphy the Michelin man<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Michelin star ceremony <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/food\/2026\/02\/04\/the-dublin-michelin-guide-ceremony-what-is-it-when-is-it-happening-and-does-it-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/food\/2026\/02\/04\/the-dublin-michelin-guide-ceremony-what-is-it-when-is-it-happening-and-does-it-matter\/\">descends on Dublin<\/a> for the first time next week, with all eyes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/food-and-drink\/this-is-the-best-restaurant-in-ireland-it-s-world-class-1.4648439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-and-style\/food-and-drink\/this-is-the-best-restaurant-in-ireland-it-s-world-class-1.4648439\">Parnell Square\u2019s Chapter One<\/a>, tipped to become Ireland\u2019s first-ever three-star restaurant in front of a home crowd. The restaurant\u2019s \u20ac235 tasting menu offers dishes such as the complicated-sounding but probably delicious \u201csaddle of Wicklow sika deer, morel farcie, foie gras, apple, braised spelt with tongue and truffle, BBQ vinegar, deer sauce infused with Ethiopian pepper\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It\u2019s far from morel farcie the Dublin public were raised. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Overheard was reminded of the surprising role of Eamon Dunphy in the capital\u2019s culinary progress. In his 2013 autobiography The Rocky Road, he describes attending a dinner in Paris in 1980 to convince young French chef Patrick Guilbaud to bring his fine food to Dublin. \u201cIt was to be a culinary version of the Shamrock Rovers project,\u201d Dunphy wrote, and his job was to be a former \u201ccolleague of George Best\u201d who could convincingly argue that 1980s Ireland was the place to be. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It worked, and Guilbaud introduced nouvelle cuisine to Ireland, where he faced \u201csavage\u201d reviews and recurrent criticism for failing to put salt and pepper on the table. \u201cYou\u2019ll leave feeling hungry with a lighter wallet,\u201d one reviewer is quoted as saying. Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud survived: it secured a Michelin star in 1989, and became the first to secure two stars in 1996, which it has held ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland now has 16 one-star and five two-star restaurants, serving cuisines both nouvelle and not. Darkness of another kind descended this week on the venerable US newspaper known worldwide for breaking the Watergate scandal in the 1970s, costing Richard Nixon his job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Wednesday, the Post laid off a third of its staff across all departments as it struggles to turn a profit. Owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeff-bezos\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jeff-bezos\">Jeff Bezo<\/a>s, one of the world\u2019s richest men through his Amazon fortune, ignored the petitioning of reporters this week as his executives made deep cuts to local, international and sport coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They were so severe that Peter Finn, editor of the international section, asked to be laid off rather than being involved in planning the cuts once he realised how severe he would be, according to a New York Times report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was a touching act of solidarity from Finn, who is a native of Roscommon and a UCD graduate. He managed more than 60 reporters, editors and other journalists in Washington and across 23 locations around the globe. While national security editor from 2013 to 2022, he oversaw teams that won three Pulitzer Prizes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">His decision to depart with his reporters made sense once the impact of the job cuts were felt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lizzie Johnson, the Post\u2019s Ukraine correspondent, tweeted on Wednesday: \u201cI was just laid off by The Washington Post in the middle of a war zone. I have no words. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw Pagans gain ground<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another successful campaign concluded for the word \u201cImbolc\u201d, the resurgent term referring to the pre-Christian Gaelic fire festival around February 1st.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gaining ground on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/2026\/01\/28\/st-brigids-activities-fire-displays-parades-and-gigs-to-see-over-bank-holiday-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/2026\/01\/28\/st-brigids-activities-fire-displays-parades-and-gigs-to-see-over-bank-holiday-weekend\/\">nonpagan St Brigid\u2019s Day<\/a>, it featured widely in media coverage and startled Overhead by appearing on Google alongside a local hardware shop\u2019s hours. \u201cImbolc may affect these hours,\u201d we were informed on the bank holiday Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Overheard is pretty sure it wasn\u2019t always this way. We asked An Coiste T\u00e9arma\u00edochta, word watchdog at Foras na Gaeilge, whether Imbolc was even a word in modern Irish, which, it turns out, it is not. It is the pre-Christian name for the spring festival and there \u201cisn\u2019t a modern Irish equivalent\u201d, Jenny N\u00ed Mhaoileoin of the coiste said. \u201cIf used in Irish it would be treated as a borrowing from the Celtic and left with that spelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to search data, 2026 shows a significant spike in interest for Imbolc, above even the peak for Bealtaine, which has the head start of being Irish for the month of May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Are we pronouncing it right? Probably not.
