{"id":287151,"date":"2026-02-08T10:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T10:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/287151\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T10:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T10:45:07","slug":"taskforce-to-tackle-high-electricity-prices-has-met-just-three-times-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/287151\/","title":{"rendered":"Taskforce to tackle high electricity prices has met just three times \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Government taskforce set up to tackle the high cost of electricity bills and growing levels of arrears has met just three times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under its own terms of reference, the National Energy Affordability Taskforce should have met at least six times by now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Its record emerged in a reply to a parliamentary question raised by Sinn F\u00e9in energy spokesman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pa-daly\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pa-daly\/\">Pa Daly<\/a>, who described it as \u201cshocking\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It also comes as latest data on arrears shows no improvement in the numbers of households in arrears on their electricity and gas bills and a slight increase in the size of those arrears. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Figures released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities-cru\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/commission-for-regulation-of-utilities-cru\/\">Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU)<\/a> for last November show 303,465 domestic customers were behind on their electricity bills and 173,845 were in arrears on their gas bills. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daly accused the taskforce of being \u201cnothing more than another deflection tactic\u201d by the Government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He described it as a \u201csmokescreen for this do-nothing Government to act as if they are doing something to address Ireland\u2019s extortionate cost of energy, but in reality have no plans to end the rip-off\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/darragh-obrien\/\">Darragh O\u2019Brien<\/a>, in his reply, said arrangements were being made for a fourth meeting of the taskforce and he pointed out that it had already carried out a significant volume of work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe first report of the taskforce was published in November 2025. This report analysed recent trends in energy costs and related matters, including arrears, and had set out a range of options for consideration as part of the Budget 2026 process,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/your-money\/2026\/02\/02\/north-south-electricity-price-comparisons-face-scrutiny-amid-claims-of-republic-price-gouging\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North-South electricity price comparisons face scrutiny amid claims of Republic \u2018price gouging\u2019Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe taskforce will now proceed with further work to develop an Energy Affordability Action Plan, including a programme of consultation and stakeholder engagement to inform the development of an action plan to be published mid-2026.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The taskforce was set up in June last year and comprises officials from the departments of Energy, Finance, Housing and Social Protection, along with representatives of ESB Networks, Gas Networks Ireland, the CRU, Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and National Economic and Social Council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Records show they met in June, July and October last year and not since. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their terms of reference stipulate they should have met  monthly until last October\u2019s budget and every six weeks afterwards, with additional meetings as deemed necessary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Daly said solutions to energy affordability were already well-known and had been raised repeatedly by his party. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs well as the reintroduction of energy credits, our proposals include enhanced powers to the regulator to tackle price gouging and a new mandate to prioritise energy affordability rather than suppliers\u2019 bottom line. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIreland\u2019s high prices are not inevitable. There are solutions.
