{"id":287819,"date":"2026-02-08T21:00:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T21:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/287819\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T21:00:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T21:00:09","slug":"no-space-for-up-to-400-asylum-seekers-in-january-amid-persistent-system-pressure-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/287819\/","title":{"rendered":"No space for up to 400 asylum seekers in January amid persistent system pressure \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was no space for almost 400 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">asylum seekers <\/a>in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">International Protection Service Accommodation <\/a>(Ipas) centres on their arrival in the State last month, Department of Justice figures show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With the system continuing to come under pressure, Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan confirmed there was no bed available for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/immigration\/\">392 people who had arrived in the period to January 29th<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some 387 asylum seekers were not accommodated in December, and there were no spaces for more than 400 in each of September, October and November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Callaghan said his department \u201cworks at all times to ensure the limited accommodation capacity is used in the best and most effective way, prioritising those people who are most vulnerable or those with families\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said a number of contingency beds must be \u201ckept available for daily arrivals\u201d and \u201cpeople with health or other vulnerabilities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As of February 4th, there were 2,591 available beds across the Ipas system, comprising 2,000 in mixed accommodation centres, 343 family beds and 248 for single males.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Minister said single male applicants \u201chave been particularly affected by shortages of accommodation since 2022\u2033. At the height of the issue in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/03\/16\/asylum-seekers-cleared-from-camp-at-mount-street-return-to-find-tents-destroyed\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2024\/03\/16\/asylum-seekers-cleared-from-camp-at-mount-street-return-to-find-tents-destroyed\/\">hundreds of men were sleeping in tents<\/a> near the International Protection Office on Mount Street in Dublin city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAt a point, over 3,500 people in this group were awaiting an offer of accommodation,\u201d said O\u2019Callaghan. \u201cThrough an ongoing programme since March 2025, this has steadily reduced to 453 people currently awaiting an offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He provided the figures in a response to a parliamentary question from Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Across the entire Ipas system, he said, \u201cmany beds are preassigned or out of use on a daily basis for essential reasons\u201d. These included referrals from homeless outreach and for people due to move from centres that are closing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBeds may be out of use within the system for a range of reasons, including infection control, renovation or family-room configurations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since the end of 2024, people living in more than 300 Ipas centres countrywide have remained stable at about 33,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Callaghan said the \u201cunprecedented increase in applications for asylum from 2022 to 2024 placed intense pressure on the accommodation system.
