{"id":288654,"date":"2026-02-09T10:32:24","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T10:32:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/288654\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T10:32:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T10:32:24","slug":"big-techs-breathtaking-660bn-spending-spree-reignites-ai-bubble-fears-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/288654\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Tech\u2019s \u2018breathtaking\u2019 $660bn spending spree reignites AI bubble fears \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Big Tech stocks sold off heavily after the companies unveiled plans to spend $660 billion (\u20ac560 billion) this year on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI), as investors fret that the \u201cbreathtaking\u201d capital expenditures are outpacing the earnings potential of the new technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon\/\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/google\/\">Google<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> are set to lose a combined $900 billion in market value since filing their quarterly earnings over the past week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Shareholders balked at the sector\u2019s gargantuan capex plans \u2013 more than the gross domestic product (GDP) of Israel \u2013 which overshadowed strong revenue growth at the companies\u2019 cloud arms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-media\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/social-media\/\">social media<\/a> giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\">Meta,<\/a> their proposed outlay on data centres and specialised chips needed to train and run advanced AI models would mark a 60 per cent rise from the $410 billion they spent in 2025 and a 165 per cent increase from $245 billion in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe capex is breathtaking,\u201d said Jim Tierney, head of the concentrated US growth fund at AllianceBernstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even a 14 per cent boost to their combined annual revenue to $1.6 trillion was not enough to overcome the pessimism. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a>, which has sat out the AI capex arms race, was the only Silicon Valley behemoth to emerge unscathed, with shares up 7.5 per cent since it reported record sales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/28\/humanity-needs-to-wake-up-to-ai-dangers-says-anthropic-chief\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Humanity needs to wake up\u2019 to AI dangers, says Anthropic chiefOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Amazon fell 11 per cent after market on Thursday after saying its capex will reach $200 billion this year \u2013 $50 billion more than expected \u2013 surpassing already eye-watering numbers from Google and Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chief executive Andy Jassy said such large sums were needed to position the company for a boom in AI, chips, robotics and satellites. He pointed to a 24 per cent growth in revenue at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon-web-services\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/amazon-web-services\/\">Amazon Web Services<\/a> as evidence investment was starting to pay off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Worst hit was Microsoft, which has fallen 18 per cent since it reported last Wednesday. Revenue at Microsoft\u2019s cloud division rose 26 per cent to $51.5 billion. But this was slightly slower than expected and the market reacted to a 66 per cent surge in quarterly data centre spending.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Is it time Ireland abolished mandatory retirement?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Microsoft also laid out for the first time its exposure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/openai\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/openai\/\">OpenAI<\/a>. It disclosed that 45 per cent of its $625 billion book of future cloud contracts was from the start-up, leading analysts to flag its over-reliance on one customer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Anna Nunoo, a senior analyst at AllianceBernstein, said this quarter\u2019s earnings had brought a \u201cshock in terms of the increased capex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe onus is on Microsoft and Amazon to prove out the attractive returns on all the spending,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even record earnings at Google were not enough to override these concerns. Parent company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/alphabet\/\">Alphabet<\/a> surpassed $400 billion in annual revenue for the first time and made $132 billion of profit in 2025. But plans to double capex to $185 billion still knocked its shares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/what-do-ads-on-chatgpt-tell-us-about-the-ai-race\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What do ads on ChatGPT tell us about the AI race?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAI bubble fears are settling back in,\u201d said Brent Thill, an analyst at Jefferies. \u201cInvestors are in a mini timeout around tech, and nothing the companies say fundamentally matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spending plans also indicate that more time and money will be required to deliver the full promises of AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Higher capex \u201ctelegraphs that it may take longer for AI strategies to play out\u201d, said Dec Mullarkey, managing director of $300 billion asset manager SLC Management. \u201cNot welcome news for investors that are already fixated on when AI-related revenue will start to show up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meta also said last week its capex would double to $135 billion, but the stock rose 10 per cent as the social media network showed how AI was improving advertising efficacy. However, it has since given up those gains as it was caught in a wider market rout that has pushed the tech-heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nasdaq\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nasdaq\/\">Nasdaq<\/a> down 4 per cent in the past five days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Software stocks were hit due to fears about new AI coding tools from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthropic\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/anthropic\/\">Anthropic<\/a> and OpenAI disrupting their businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Markets have also been rattled by confirmation that OpenAI\u2019s $100 billion investment and infrastructure deal with Nvidia has not gone ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oracle\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/oracle\/\">Oracle<\/a>, which relies on OpenAI for a large share of its future cloud business, dropped 18 per cent over five days even as it raised $25 billion in debt and insisted it was \u201chighly confident in OpenAI\u2019s ability to raise funds and meet its commitments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Apple stood out as the winner from the round of earnings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company reported a record $144 billion in quarterly revenue driven by a surge in iPhone 17 sales in the United States and China. Capex fell 17 per cent to $2.4 billion in the final three months of the year, giving it an annual total of about $12 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In January, Apple struck a deal to use Google\u2019s Gemini to overhaul its AI features, including its Siri voice assistant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cApple\u2019s tiny capex is the AI dividend of partnering with Google for compute and frontier models,\u201d said Dan Hutcheson, vice-chair of market intelligence firm TechInsights. \u201cThis shifts Apple\u2019s AI capex to a pay-as-you-go model,\u201d with the iPhone maker outsourcing most of the underlying infrastructure costs to Google.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The partnership \u201cabsolutely\u201d explained some of Google\u2019s increased capex plans for 2026, Hutcheson added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chipmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nvidia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/nvidia\/\">Nvidia<\/a>, the world\u2019s most valuable public company, now faces a volatile market as it prepares to announce earnings later this month.
