\n The Bank of Uganda (BoU) on Monday maintained its Central Bank Rate at 9.75%, where it has remained since October 2024.\n <\/p>\n
\n Governor Michael Atingi-Ego said the policy stance remains appropriate to support economic activity while keeping inflation anchored around the bank\u2019s 5% medium-term target.\n <\/p>\n
\n Inflation remains well below that level. Headline inflation edged up to 3.2% in January 2026, from 3.1% in December, mainly due to higher prices in some services, including air transport.\n <\/p>\n
\n Over the past year, headline inflation averaged 3.5%, while core inflation averaged 3.8%, the central bank said.\n <\/p>\n
\n According to the BoU, the low inflation environment reflects tight monetary policy, coordination with fiscal authorities, a relatively stable exchange rate and easing global inflation.\n <\/p>\n
\n Food prices moderated sharply in January due to favourable weather, partly offsetting modest increases in energy and fuel costs.\n <\/p>\n
\n The central bank expects inflation to remain slightly below target in 2026, within a 3.8%-4.3% range, before stabilising around 5% over the medium term.\n <\/p>\n
\n However, it warned that risks remain elevated, including stronger domestic demand driven by government spending, exchange-rate pressures, geopolitical tensions and weather-related shocks to food supply.\n <\/p>\n
\n Economic growth averaged 6.3% in the first three quarters of 2025, supported mainly by consumption, particularly government spending. Growth for the current financial year ending in June is projected at 6.5% to 7%.\n <\/p>\n
\n Over the medium term, growth is expected to strengthen to around 8%, underpinned by increased public investment and oil-related infrastructure projects.\n <\/p>\n
\n Uganda is preparing to begin pumping commercial volumes of crude oil later this year, a development expected to boost economic activity.\n <\/p>\n
