The National Transport Authority has lodged a planning application for a new park and ride facility in the western suburbs of Galway.<\/p>\n
The proposed development is intended to increase usage of buses running to and from the Knocknacarra area, as well as promoting other active travel measures.<\/p>\n
A total of 176 parking spaces, along with dedicated bus bays, would be constructed on a site close to Cappagh Park.<\/p>\n
The NTA says the plans also entail some road alterations, to allow for access to the planned location.<\/p>\n
The park and ride facility forms part of an effort to reduce the number of private cars on the Western Distributor Road, the main artery through the suburb.<\/p>\n
A large volume of vehicles use the route each day, with regular congestion for city bound traffic, particularly during morning rush hour.<\/p>\n
It would serve as the terminus for two new routes which are due to be introduced as part of a wider Bus Connects initiative for the city.<\/p>\n
That process is held up by legal challenge at present.<\/p>\n
