Enceladus interacts with the gas giant\u2019s magnetic field, generating intermittent aurora in Saturn\u2019s upper atmosphere and electromagnetic waves that travel along invisible magnetic connections between them.<\/p>\n
During its 13-year mission, Cassini repeatedly crossed these magnetic field lines linked to Enceladus.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnceladus is famous for its water geysers, but its actual impact and interaction with the giant planet has remained partly unknown,\u201d said Dr. Lina Hadid, a researcher at the Laboratoire de Physique de Plasmas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe results from Cassini transform our vision of the moon\u2019s role in the Saturnian system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Hadid and colleagues used data from four Cassini instruments to study how energy and particles move between the moon and Saturn.<\/p>\n
They detected wave activity characteristic of Alfv\u00e9n waves (similar to vibrations on a string), forming as Saturn\u2019s magnetic field flows past Enceladus.<\/p>\n
Due to a complex system of reflection at both Saturn\u2019s ionosphere and the boundary of Enceladus\u2019 torus, these waves were found not only near the moon but also trailing far behind it, extending more than 504,000 km (over 2,000 times the moon\u2019s radius) behind it.<\/p>\n
This is the first time that Alfv\u00e9n waves have been observed to be directly linked to the charged particles associated with Enceladus.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first time such an extensive electromagnetic reach by Enceladus has been observed, proving that this small moon acts as a giant planetary-scale Alfv\u00e9n wave generator,\u201d said Dr. Thomas Chust, also from the Laboratoire de Physique de Plasmas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis work sets the stage for future studies of other systems, such as the icy moons of Jupiter or exoplanets, by showing that a small moon with an electrically-conducting atmosphere can influence its host over vast distances on the scale of the giant planet itself.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe findings highlight the importance for future missions to Enceladus, such as the planned ESA orbiter and lander in the 2040s, to carry instrumentation that can study these electromagnetic interactions in even more detail,\u201d Dr. Hadid said.<\/p>\n
