Late-night hosts unpacked the Trump administration\u2019s continued attempts to distract from and underplay the Epstein files<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It took barely a glance at Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s social media posts on Tuesday for Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> to know: \u201cWe\u2019ve got a code orange de-mental emergency going on here right now. I mean, he\u2019s gone. He\u2019s totally gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The host focused in particular on the US president\u2019s meltdown<\/a> over the $4.6bn Gordie Howe international bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan<\/a>, which Trump falsely claimed had been built with \u201cvirtually no US content\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump threatened to block the opening of the bridge, named after the Canadian-born Detroit Red Wings hockey legend, scheduled to happen later this spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Canada, you know how this works,\u201d said Kimmel. \u201cPull out the Sharpie, cross out the Gordie Howe, write in the Donald Trump and everybody can relax, alright?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd of course, all of this, every bit of this, is an effort to distract us\u201d from Trump\u2019s name appearing in the Epstein files more than 1m times, according to representative Jamie Raskin, who has reviewed the unredacted files.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s only 3m pages in the whole thing,\u201d Kimmel noted. \u201cThat\u2019s more than Harry Potter gets mentioned in all seven Harry Potter books.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also in the Epstein files is Trump\u2019s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick, who claimed that he and his wife cut ties with Epstein in 2005, after the financier made an \u201cinappropriate\u201d remark and the couple decided to \u201cnever be in the room with that disgusting person ever again\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, unsealed emails indicate that Lutnick visited Epstein\u2019s island in 2012, seven years after he allegedly cut ties with him. Asked at a congressional hearing, Lutnick admitted that he \u201cdid have lunch with him, as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation\u201d with his wife and four children.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a fun dad!\u201d Kimmel quipped. \u201cWhere do you want to go, kids? Want to have lunch with the most notorious pedophile in American history?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that you brought your family to Epstein island is not the point,\u201d Kimmel added. \u201cIt\u2019s super crazy, but it\u2019s not the point. The point is you lied about never being in the room with \u2018that disgusting person\u2019 ever again. Not only were you in the room with that disgusting person, you sailed to his island for lunch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat from Maryland, then asked about references in the files to the fact that Epstein had expressed interest in one of Lutnick\u2019s nannies. Lutnick claimed he had \u201cno idea about that \u2026 whole thing. I don\u2019t recall it having anything to do with me, and I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Kimmel noted, just one Republican, senator Thomas Massie from Kentucky, has called for Lutnick\u2019s resignation. Meanwhile, Republicans<\/a> such as representative Lisa McClain, from Michigan, fume publicly about immigration, blaming Democrats for fostering crime fear-mongering with lines such as \u201clet\u2019s villainize the ICE agents and let\u2019s celebrate the people who are raping your children!\u201d<\/p>\n

Kimmel had not patience for it: \u201cCan you imagine how ignorant these people are, screaming about pedophiles and rapists while members of their own party seem to be doing everything they can to protect the pedophiles and the rapists in the Epstein files?\u201d<\/p>\n

And on the Daily Show, Jordan Klepper also mocked Lutnick\u2019s about-face on Epstein, after saying multiple times on a podcast that he was \u201cgross\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way that seven years after saying he would never see Epstein again that he visited him on his private island!\u201d Klepper said facetiously, before replaying Lutnick\u2019s testimony that he only visited Epstein Island for lunch.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas eating with a sex criminal your only option for lunch, Howard?\u201d Klepper mocked. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t have tried making a PB&J just once?<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the fact that you went there on a boat makes it so much worse,\u201d he added. \u201cI mean, if you ran into him at a Potbelly\u2019s and he said \u2018sit down,\u2019 I would understand. But you actively navigated a ship toward the man. You\u2019re out there shouting: \u2018Captain, raise the sails and set a course for Pedophile Island!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHoward, look man, I don\u2019t think I could be more disappointed.\u201d Except Lutnick then went on to say, as a defense, that he also brought his wife and four children and nannies along with him. Said a stunned Klepper: \u201c\u2018I went to Epstein Island but don\u2019t worry, I brought my kids\u2019 isn\u2019t the excuse you think it is. Good God, man.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Lutnick, the family \u201chad lunch on the island, that is true. For an hour, then we left, with all of my children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFather of the year over here!\u201d Klepper joked. \u201cJust to be clear: Howard Lutnick went from \u2018I never saw that gross man again\u2019 to \u2018OK, I did visit his island\u2019 to \u2018Hey, back off, I left with all my kids, OK? I counted them. I\u2019m the good guy here!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I shouldn\u2019t be too harsh on Howard,\u201d he added. \u201cLet he who has never sworn he cut ties with a convicted sex offender only to later dock his private yacht onto a private sex island for a quick lunch before continuing his family vacation with not one but multiple nannies cast the first one and done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Late-night hosts unpacked the Trump administration\u2019s continued attempts to distract from and underplay the Epstein files.
