{"id":293038,"date":"2026-02-11T21:42:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T21:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/293038\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T21:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T21:42:07","slug":"keep-children-and-pets-away-warning-after-deadly-plant-washes-up-on-beach-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/293038\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Keep children and pets away\u2019 \u2013 warning after deadly plant washes up on beach \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A local authority has warned the public to \u201cstay clear\u201d of a highly toxic plant which has been spotted along beach following recent storms and river flooding. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Known as dead man\u2019s fingers, hemlock water-dropwort  can kill humans within an hour in certain doses and is poisonous to pets and livestock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In its natural habitat it grows alongside waterways and exhibits flowers and foliage similar to wild types of carrot or parsnip plant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Beneath the soil, it has a number of swollen roots which earn it its nickname and which are sometimes spotted, especially along coastlines, after the plant has been uprooted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath-county-council\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath-county-council\/\">Meath County Council<\/a> is urging people to \u201cstay alert on coastal walks\u201d after sightings of the plant in the local authority\u2019s area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Max Cody, a local businessman who spotted the parsnip-like roots on the beaches of Laytown and Bettystown on Tuesday, warned people to be vigilant with children and pets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe south-easterly winds and super high tides recently has probably uprooted and washed these plants here, possibly from the nearby Delvin, Nanny and Boyne rivers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is definitely the plant and, as far as I know, there is no known antidote for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Cody runs Fourshore Adventures, an outdoor pursuits business, in the area, so spends much of his time on the beach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was away in recent days and spotted the plant on his return. He also works in forest schools where he teaches about toxic plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEven to touch the leaves, it can cause blisters, but if ingested it can attack the nervous system and cause death within hours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSo please keep pets and children away from these plants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meath County Council said it was \u201caware of recent reports of hemlock water-dropwort washing up on Bettystown Beach\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Hemlock water-dropwort grows by riversides. Photograph: Richard Avery <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe roots of this plant look a bit like parsnips, but they are highly toxic, so please stay clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The council is advising the public not to touch anything that looks like a parsnip-shaped root washed up on the beach.
