\n\tKatie Holmes<\/a> paid tribute to her Dawson\u2019s Creek castmate, James Van Der Beek<\/a>, on Instagram<\/a> on Thursday following news of his death. In a handwritten note, the actress listed the many virtues she saw in Van Der Beek, who died Wednesday<\/a> after a cancer battle: \u201cbravery, compassion, selflessness, strength, an appreciation for life and the action taken to live life with the integrity that life is art \u2014 creating a beautiful marriage, six loving children.\u201d She summarized all of this by describing Van Der Beek\u2019s life as \u201cthe journey of a Hero,\u201d underlining that last word.<\/p>\n

\n\tHolmes wrote separately that she had written the missive \u201cwith a heavy heart,\u201d adding his loss had been \u201ca lot to process.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James\u2019 journey,\u201d she wrote. \u201cHe is beloved. Kimberly [Van Der Beek], we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn her note, Holmes wrote directly to James, telling him that sharing space with his imagination was sacred. She also collected memories of Van Der Beek that she treasured: \u201claughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs,\u201d all of which she described as \u201cadventures of a unique youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tVan Der Beek had revealed that he was battling colorectal cancer<\/a> in November 2024, 18 months after he had begun receiving treatment for the disease. Upon announcing his death, his wife, Kimberly, wrote that Van der Beek<\/a> \u201cmet his final days with courage, faith, and grace.\u201d She subsequently launched a GoFundMe<\/a> to help support the family.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time,\u201d Kimberly wrote in her statement. \u201cThose days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
