The Clonskeagh Mosque in Dublin has officially reopened this evening, nine months after it closed.<\/p>\n
The mosque ceased operating after an incident in April last year, which led to concerns about people’s safety and security.<\/p>\n
It led to questions over governance, financial oversight, and accountability at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland (ICCI). Legal cases also took place.<\/p>\n
Despite the mosque closure, the school, restaurant and shop at the site continued to operate.<\/p>\n
However, members of the Muslim community in Dublin, particularly those living on the southside of the city, have been unable to access the mosque for daily and Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
The mosque has capacity for 5,000 people. Larger festivals like Eid see an attendance of about 3,500, while around 1,000 Muslims attend the mosque weekly for Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
The reopening, which is being attended by dignitaries and members of the ICCI board, has been hailed as a pivotal moment for the Muslim community in Ireland.<\/p>\n
There is an ambition to create a more transparent approach to the Centre\u2019s relationship with the community and the Irish State.<\/p>\n
Stressing the need for tolerance, Zahid Jamil – who is a Board Member – said there was no space for hate speech at the centre.<\/p>\n
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland which runs the site has been funded by the Al Maktoum Foundation based in the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n
The foundation has invested millions into the facility from its construction in the 1990s to today.<\/p>\n
Some have travelled from Dubai to attend the event this evening which included a ceremonial opening of the mosque doors.<\/p>\n
There were prayers followed by a reception for ambassadors and members of the Muslim community.<\/p>\n
