{"id":296163,"date":"2026-02-13T15:00:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T15:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/296163\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T15:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T15:00:07","slug":"met-eireann-issues-fresh-weather-alerts-for-heavy-rain-and-snow-after-major-flooding-in-dublin-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/296163\/","title":{"rendered":"Met \u00c9ireann issues fresh weather alerts for heavy rain and snow after major flooding in Dublin \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin City Council said it is querying the \u201ctimelines\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/weather-events\/\">weather<\/a> warnings after the capital experienced \u201cexceptionally heavy rainfall\u201d overnight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wicklow\/\">Wicklow<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a> were hit with intense rainfall during the night and a number of areas woke to major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/floods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/floods\/\">flooding<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\">Met \u00c9ireann<\/a> said the rain was more intense than forecast earlier on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It said an area of low pressure to the west of the country \u201csteered a weather front over Ireland\u201d during Thursday and Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis weather front brought spells of heavy rain to parts of the midlands and the east of the country during Thursday evening and overnight.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Regarding Dublin and Wicklow, it said a status yellow rainfall warning was issued at 2.36am. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis warning was issued to increase public awareness, taking account of expected intense rainfall during the morning commuting period.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Two new warnings for heavy rain and snow have been issued for Saturday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A status yellow rain warning for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cork\/\">Cork<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry\/\">Kerry<\/a> is in place from noon to midnight and includes the possibility of flash flooding. A separate status yellow warning for rain with the possibility of snow is also in place from midday across Connacht, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donegal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donegal\/\">Donegal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cavan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cavan\/\">Cavan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/longford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/longford\/\">Longford<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The forecaster warned that the rain will be heavy at times and will turn to sleet or snow, together with strengthening winds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Friday, Dublin City Council noted that a total of 46mm of rain had been recorded at the Mellowes Road rain gauge overnight, with 9.6mm falling in a single hour. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCombined with already saturated ground conditions, this resulted in significant surface water runoff and a number of flooding incidents across the city,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA full review of the event has commenced in parallel with ongoing responses, including the timeliness of weather warnings\/forecasts. We recognise the distress flooding can cause for residents and businesses and will continue to provide updates as further verified information becomes available.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Emergency crews were deployed throughout the night and continue to respond on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhile rainfall has eased, river levels remain elevated and conditions are being closely monitored,\u201d the council said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Significant impact was reported in several areas including Clongriffin and Ballymun, where flooding hit roads and properties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were early reports of flooding in the areas of Clongriffin, Swords, Santry, Rush and parts of the M1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Junction 4 on the M1 at Donabate was affected, with the southbound slip road closed,  Transport Infrastructure Ireland said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dublin Bus advised of diversions on four of its routes including the 16, 33, 41 and 41C due to flooding. It said those routes will divert at Coolock Lane on to the M1 to Dublin Airport due to flooding at Collinstown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bus \u00c9ireann said that flooding and rain have affected some of its services, including the 115 between Navan and Dublin and the NV1 route between Enfield and Dublin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Friday morning, DAA said that due to the heavy rainfall overnight, some roads leading to Dublin Airport are closed or \u201ctrickier than usual to navigate\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Drivers have been advised to follow local diversions and take extra care. Flights are operating as normal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Ireland will be cold and mainly dry over the weekend, with a status yellow ice warning coming into effect and the possibility of a little snow over higher ground. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\">Met \u00c9ireann<\/a> has issued a status yellow low temperature and ice warning for the whole country from 9pm on Friday to 10am on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Friday morning will see some frost and ice, especially in the west and the north of Ireland. Rain in Munster and south Leinster will clear through the morning, with mostly dry and sunny conditions following. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">There will be a few isolated showers in the north and west, with highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees. It will then become very cold on Friday night. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">While conditions will be mostly clear, some higher cloud will start to build from the Atlantic overnight. Lowest temperatures, as the weather warning sets in, are expected to be between  -4 and 1 degrees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">On Saturday, it will be another frosty start. Spells of sunshine will follow, the best of them in the east. Highest temperatures are again expected to be between 3 and 7 degrees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Saturday night will be wet and windy for a time, with spells of heavy rain. There will be more sleet and possibly a little snow for a time over higher ground in the north and east. Lowest temperatures overnight will be between 1 and 5 degrees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Sunday will be bright with sunshine and scattered showers, most of which will be widespread in the west and north. Some of the showers will be heavy, with a chance of hail and maybe the odd isolated thunderstorm near the coast. Highest temperatures will be 7 to 11 degrees. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Sunday night will be breezy, especially further to the west and northwest. There will be a mix of clear spells and scattered showers, some heavy, including hail and possibly sleet over higher ground. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">More persistent rain is possible in parts of the north and northwest, with a greater chance of thunderstorms there too.
