{"id":296316,"date":"2026-02-13T16:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T16:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/296316\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T16:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T16:55:12","slug":"wuthering-heights-is-whitewashing-heathcliff-claim-gen-z-fans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/296316\/","title":{"rendered":"Wuthering Heights is whitewashing Heathcliff, claim Gen Z fans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As long as books have been made into films, readers have complained about casting.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Radcliffe did not have Harry Potter\u2019s green eyes, Tom Cruise was too short to be Jack Reacher, and Ren\u00e9e Zellweger was too American to play Bridget Jones.<\/p>\n<p>For fans of Emily Bront\u00eb, the new film of Wuthering Heights, released in UK cinemas on Friday, is no exception.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z book-lovers have accused the film of whitewashing the character of Heathcliff by casting Jacob Elordi, a white Australian who has also appeared in Saltburn and Frankenstein.<\/p>\n<p>The criticism, aimed at Emerald Fennell, the director, has crystallised on BookTok, the community of influencers and book fans on TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Young readers have claimed the casting removes undertones of racism in the book, which exacerbated Heathcliff\u2019s outsider status and his perceived unsuitability for Cathy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Anita Rani, the BBC presenter, who made a documentary last year on the Bront\u00ebs, posted on Instagram to criticise the casting, saying Heathcliff was \u201cnot white\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cAt the time, Britain was at the height of the colonial expansion,\u201d she said. \u201cThis tiny island was getting very rich from doing some very dark things around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anita Rani commenting on the casting of Heathcliff.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/6a85ea73-9ff1-4041-baa8-33803e21fd55.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anita Rani\u2019s social media post<\/p>\n<p>INSTAGRAM<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said the Bront\u00ebs were \u201cquestioning everything, particularly Victorian morality, which is why it\u2019s important that Heathcliff isn\u2019t white\u201d. She added: \u201cIt\u2019s on the page, and what it does it changes everything. Think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In the novel Heathcliff\u2019s ethnicity is ambiguous. He is found on the streets of Liverpool, a city which controlled 80 per cent of the British slave trade at the end of the 18th century, when the story is set.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He is described as a \u201cgypsy\u201d multiple times, \u201cdark-skinned\u201d and \u201ca little Lascar, or an American or Spanish castaway\u201d. A lascar referred to a sailor from India or Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Heathcliff tells Nelly, the housekeeper, he wished he had the \u201clight hair and fair skin\u201d of Edgar Linton, to which she replies: \u201cWho knows but your father was Emperor of China, and your mother an Indian queen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">All previous screen adaptations of the novel have cast white actors as Heathcliff, including Tom Hardy and Ralph Fiennes, bar the 2011 film by Andrea Arnold, who cast James Howson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Lottie Patterson, 34, a social media manager with an English literature degree from London, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@cpatts__\/video\/7602554061111430422?lang=en\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted a video<\/a> after the casting decisions, which received over a million views. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cIt\u2019s a book you study around GCSEs and A-level times. It was the thing that pushed me into doing my degree in English,\u201d she said, \u201cThere\u2019s a joke online that English literature graduates are going to riot on release day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lottie Patterson, a woman with blonde hair, smiling.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/585ca6ca-502e-4043-9ad9-798d4616a886.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She said omitting the racist undertones from the novel removed some of the \u201cforbidden-ness\u201d of the potential romance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/film\/article\/best-wuthering-heights-films-movies-emerald-fennell-d0l6kxmgm\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wuthering Heights \u2014 by the stars who tried to sex it up before<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Jananie Velu, 28, an English graduate and BookTok creator in Toronto, Canada, said 80 per cent of her 55,000 followers were \u201cangry and appalled and shocked\u201d at the casting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThere\u2019s no real societal pressure keeping Cathy and Heathcliff apart in the film,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cPeople will bend over backwards to try to say that he\u2019s not black or brown, that he\u2019s Irish or Spanish, because they don\u2019t want to allow a person of colour in this narrative, even though his difference is so integral to the story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jananie Velu standing in front of a red rose and green foliage background with the title &quot;Wuthering Heights&quot; in white lace-patterned letters.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/5788a681-5b58-4854-acbb-029c2a496fcb.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Simone Siew, 29, a master\u2019s graduate and book influencer from Chicago, said her 31,000 followers are predominantly 20 to 35-year-old women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cThey think that in 2026 we\u2019re too in the future to be ignoring things like race and casting a white man just for sales and for eye candy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cShe\u2019s so heavily tied herself to the source material, and how much she loves that book, that\u2019s where a lot of the anger is coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Simone Siew, a Chicago-based writer and literary influencer.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/\/e23ef8c4-ded3-472b-9792-7d497fbc4ffe.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Fennell has described Wuthering Heights as her \u201cfavourite book in the world\u201d, which had driven her \u201cmad\u201d since she read it at 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She previously said Elordi looked exactly like the illustration of Heathcliff on the first copy she had read. When asked about her casting choice at the Los Angeles premiere, she said: \u201cYou can only ever kind of make the movie that you sort of imagined yourself when you read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The film title also has quotation marks around Wuthering Heights to establish it is an interpretation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Other casting decisions have strayed from the physical descriptions in the book. These cast actors from ethnic minorities in roles previously played by white actors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/life-style\/celebrity\/article\/are-margot-robbie-jacob-elordi-dating-wuthering-heights-xjbg2wz9r\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi and the Hollywood \u2018showmance\u2019 industry<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">But Patterson said: \u201cIt\u2019s the reverse, isn\u2019t it? It\u2019s because it feels like his race is important and intrinsic to the story. It\u2019s me\u2026 Why Jacob Elordi is the hottest man on the planet<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">She acknowledged Fennell could have been leaning more into the interpretation of Heathcliff as a \u201clower-class outsider\u201d, but said it was \u201cimpossible\u201d to teach the Bront\u00ebs\u2019 fiction without discussing ethnicity and colonialism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cToday\u2019s students would rightly be horrified if we didn\u2019t consider Heathcliff\u2019s racial origins and his possible back story,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Fennell and Warner Brothers were both approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As long as books have been made into films, readers have complained about casting.
