Of all the acting nominees at this year\u2019s Academy Awards<\/a>, nobody is less of a public character than Sentimental Value\u2019s<\/a> Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. That\u2019s mostly because the Norwegian actress was a virtual unknown prior to her breakout year, especially in America. But even her recent Instagram posts<\/a> are just benign \u201cthank you\u201ds to various bodies that supported her film, so she\u2019s not seeking celebrity. In a new Variety<\/a> interview, it became clear why she\u2019s not bothering to \u201cplay the game\u201d: She\u2019s genuinely much, much cooler than this whole awards rigmarole.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy value as a person is not reliant on me being nominated for anything or being snubbed,\u201d she said in the conversation. \u201cIt\u2019s such a constructed reality. It\u2019s not a real competition. We made something months ago, and now we\u2019re putting it in a pot, and somebody\u2019s going to choose one.\u201d Hey \u2014 tell that to campaigners like Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet or Bradley Cooper. Lilleaas even laughed at the terminology built into the scene. \u201c\u2018Snub\u2019 is also a new word,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other interviews, Lilleaas seems altogether skeptical of the process, even if she\u2019s enjoying the accolades. \u201cIt certainly has given me some sort of confidence that I\u2019m sure is gonna be my enemy also in a way,\u201d she told Entertainment Tonight<\/a> on the day of the Oscar Luncheon. \u201cI\u2019m gonna lose it at some point. It\u2019s gonna switch and I\u2019m gonna think, Oh my God, now I have to live up to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, one good thing about being too cool for the American film industry\u2019s awards-based hobnobbing is that she isn\u2019t spending her time in fancy rooms desperately networking. \u201cI want to work with people who want to work with me,\u201d she added to Variety. \u201cI\u2019m not the kind of person who scratches at people\u2019s doors. I will go where I\u2019m wanted.\u201d God, there is something so refreshing about a Scandinavian with a healthy dose of disdain.<\/p>\n
