This is especially true for artists whose studio is not a separate destination but a room down the hall. In these homes inspiration is shaped as much by daily rhythms as by materials: a pause for lunch, the interruption of a walk, the decision to step away and return.

This impulse to collapse the boundary between living and making art has a long history. Claude Monet pulled together his refuge in Giverny as carefully as his canvases, designing the gardens that would become both his subject and his studio. Georgia O’Keeffe calibrated her New Mexico houses as extensions of her practice, assembling walls and windows with the same discipline she applied to her paintings. Louise Bourgeois spent decades working inside her Chelsea townhouse, its bedrooms and closets quietly absorbing drawings, sculptures, and memory. At Donald Judd’s 101 Spring Street, separation was abandoned entirely: Art, furniture, architecture, and daily life existed as a single spatial conversation.

MICHEL FIGUET

Partial frescoes on display in the home of French artists Dany Hazebroucq and Gilles Blanchard in Llucmajor, on the island of Mallorca.

That tradition continues in present-day homes where creation is woven into everyday life. In the heart of Llucmajor, a town in southern Mallorca where narrow streets hum with history, a former music school is now home to French artists (and couple) Dany Hazebroucq and Gilles Blanchard. After years of walking the island’s back roads, they recognized this townhouse as a place that could hold both domestic life and art making. Their restoration was deliberately restrained, allowing the building’s bones to breathe again.

Inside, the house reads as an inventory of two whirring imaginations: walls layered with their own work, corners punctuated by antiques gathered over time, damaged plaster replaced by a fresco depicting an ancient conquest. Blanchard sketches expansive Mediterranean landscapes in pencil; Hazebroucq paints richly colored portraits inspired by Renaissance masters. The residence is neither backdrop nor showroom but an active collaborator.

“The practice of drawing is inseparable from everyday life,” Blanchard says. “There is an organic connection between the time devoted to art and the time devoted to other activities, and the presence of the studio within the living space of the house is a central element.” Their workrooms occupy the entire upper floor, organized into distinct areas for preparation, execution, storage, and reflection—close enough to feel continuous yet separate enough to focus on their respective functions.

MICHEL FIGUET

Blanchard’s pencil drawings.

And just beyond the front door the village unfolds—children playing, footsteps on stone, the steady bustle of Llucmajor. The home holds both worlds at once. “It is this diversity that is our greatest source of pleasure,” Blanchard says.

That sense of proximity—between life and labor, pause and production—resonates with many artists working in the place they live. In the high desert of California, Duncan Niederlitz runs his multidisciplinary fabrication studio, Material Forms, on his own property. “The number one thing,” he says, “is I can hang out with my dog.” The informality is structural. When frustration creeps in, Niederlitz steps outside—to cook lunch, to garden, to share a meal with his wife—before returning to work. “You don’t feel guilty if you need to work 12 hours of the day.”

A similar closeness animates the work of Kristan Kennedy, an artist, curator, and educator based in Portland, Oregon, who lives directly above the studio where she makes her abstract paintings. After days spent in a public-facing role as artistic director of the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, she says the studio below offers a controlled retreat. “It’s cloistered, private, and not affected by the industry,” she says. “It’s a self-directed space where I can flow between my life and my practice.” For Kennedy the studio is as much psychic as physical, and it not only accommodates the work, it sometimes reshapes it.

MICHEL FIGUET

Hazebroucq’s Renaissance-inspired portraits.

What links these homes isn’t their appearance or contents, but their logic. From gardens in Giverny to townhouses in Mallorca to desert properties in California, these spaces have more in common philosophically than stylistically. Doors that close. Light that behaves. Access carefully controlled. When the home becomes the studio, creative space is no longer something you go to—it’s something you live inside.

This story originally appeared in the March 2026 issue of Elle Decor. SUBSCRIBE

3 min read Creative labor doesn’t retreat from domestic life so much as settle into it—threading through kitchens,…

[31
307,304,305,306,4959,141256,308,1107,93,61,60,1106,141257,141255
0":"post-297273","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-arts-and-design","8":"tag-arts","9":"tag-arts-and-design","10":"tag-artsanddesign","11":"tag-artsdesign","12":"tag-content-type-feature","13":"tag-contentid-2c35bd65-bbd6-45b5-83c9-1ffef322dfad","14":"tag-design","15":"tag-displaytype-standard-article","16":"tag-entertainment","17":"tag-ie","18":"tag-ireland","19":"tag-locale-us","20":"tag-read_time-4","21":"tag-shorttitle-how-creatives-live
["GET
