More impressively, it achieved this without any help from Apple. Since then, the feature has remained exclusive to the Pixel 10 family, though Google promised to expand it to more Android devices this year. Now, it looks like that expansion is beginning with the 2025 Pixel 9 lineup, at least on a limited scale.

Several Pixel 9 owners on Reddit report that they can now use Quick Share to AirDrop files to iPhones, Macs, or iPads. The feature appeared on their devices after installing the latest Google Play system update, followed by an update to the Quick Share extension.

If you own a Pixel 9, head to Settings > System > Software updates > Google Play System update to install the latest build available.

To update the Quick Share extension, tap your Google account name in the Settings menu. From the page that opens, navigate to All services > System services > Quick Share extension. Tap install if the plugin is not already installed.

If the feature still doesn’t appear after updating to the latest Play system build and installing the Quick Share extension, try restarting your phone to see if that triggers it.

AirDrop support on the Pixel 9 was first spotted in the first Android Canary build of 2026 (ZP11.251212.007) in early January.

Only a limited rollout for now

Based on reports, it seems the Quick Share extension with AirDrop compatibility is only showing up for Pixel 9 users on the Google Play system update beta channel. Even installing Android 17 Beta 1 will not guarantee you access to the feature.

For now, it looks like Google is rolling out Quick Share–AirDrop compatibility on a limited basis to select users. My Pixel 8 Pro is running the latest Play system beta build, but AirDrop support is not live for me yet. So, it seems Google is currently testing wider Quick Share–AirDrop compatibility with the Pixel 9 family.

The company could officially bring AirDrop support to the Pixel 9 with the next big Quarterly Platform Update in March. As for other Android devices, it should only be a matter of time before the feature expands to them.

In November 2025, Google did the unexpected by making Quick Share compatible with Apple’s AirDrop.
