Josh Freese has discussed life after his departure from Foo Fighters<\/a>, saying \u201cno one should feel sorry\u201d for him.<\/p>\n

In May last year,\u00a0the Foos announced that Josh Freese had been let go as their drummer<\/a>, with Freese\u00a0saying he was \u201cshocked\u201d and \u201cdisappointed\u201d by the decision<\/a>. He had joined the band as their touring drummer in 2023 following the sudden passing of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.<\/a><\/p>\n

He was replaced<\/a>\u00a0by former\u00a0Nine Inch Nails<\/a> drummer Ilan Rubin, with Freese going in the opposite direction, appearing with Trent Reznor and co. on their North American tour in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Since his departure from Foo Fighters, he\u2019s also reunited with Weezer<\/a> \u2013 who he played with as a touring drummer between 2007 and 2012 \u2013 joining the band on their South American trek last November.<\/p>\n

Now, in a new interview with Modern Drummer<\/a>, Freese has reflected on his time with the Foos, as well as life since.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a couple small theories, but I can\u2019t really go into them right now,\u201d he began, of his sacking from the band. \u201cI did really enjoy the two years I spent with those guys however, and they were good to me\u2026 until they weren\u2019t,\u201d he told the magazine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked playing with them. And I loved having Dave [Grohl]<\/a> as a bandleader. I truly respect him so much as a drummer first and foremost,\u201d he added. \u201cTo me, he\u2019s a drummer first and everything else is second. I\u2019ve listened to him on all the great records he\u2019s played drums on more than I\u2019ve listened to any Foo Fighters stuff. It really was cool being in a band where the leader is a phenomenal drummer that you respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freese went on to say, \u201cI enjoyed being around those guys, they were generous and good to me\u2026 and that\u2019s what makes the whole thing even more of a mystery. I think I\u2019m a pretty good read on people, and I did not see that coming. One day it was nothing but laughs, we\u2019re on stage and Dave\u2019s looking at me every night like, \u2018You\u2019re killing it dude!!!\u2019 And then it was just\u2026 over.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for finding out he was fired, Freese recalled, \u201cThe day it went down I was hanging out on a day off with A Perfect Circle<\/a> and the Primus<\/a> guys. Everyone was in shock and asking me what the hell happened. I just remember thinking that I was really grateful to be out there on tour with my friends and with a great crew\u2026 playing music I liked with people that I\u2019ve had a long history with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freese went on to reflect on life since the sacking. \u201cSomeone recently said to me, \u2018Man, you\u2019ve had a tough year.\u2019 And I thought, Really? So the Foo Fighters thing is over. Big deal, that was a blip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that I\u2019ve been touring with Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle again, playing some shows with Weezer, working in the studio with everyone from Danny Elfman<\/a> to Billy Idol<\/a>,\u201d he added. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m back where I belong. Trust me\u2026 no one should feel sorry for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Regarding his departure from Foo Fighters<\/a>, Freese said in May that \u201cno reason was given\u201d but that he \u201cenjoyed the past two years with them\u201d and that he supports \u201cwhatever they feel is best for the band\u201d.\u00a0He also jokingly shared his \u201c10 possible reasons for being booted from Foo Fighters.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

In August, he reflected that the move was \u201cprobably more an issue with their management\u201d<\/a> and also confessed that the band\u2019s music wasn\u2019t something he \u201cresonated with.\u201d Then, in December, he said that still isn\u2019t sure why he was let go by the band<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In other news, Foo Fighters are currently teasing a new album, sharing 11 new song snippets on their website<\/a>.
