Beloved Dawson’s Creek actor James Van Der Beek has tragically died this week following a two-and-a-half-year battle with bowel cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n His heartbroken family announced the devastating news, saying: “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time.<\/p>\n “Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.”<\/p>\n The father of six had previously opened up about his colorectal cancer diagnosis, passionately encouraging others to undergo screening and familiarise themselves with warning signs.<\/p>\n Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek tragically died aged 48 just over a year since sharing his colorectal cancer diagnosis(Image: James Van Der Beek\/Instagram)<\/p>\n He admitted he “associated cancer with age and with unhealthy, sedentary lifestyles” and considered himself exceptionally fit and healthy, reports RSVP Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n Yet when he began noticing changes to his bowel movements, he initially put it down to dietary choices.<\/p>\n “I thought maybe I needed to stop coffee. Or maybe not put cream in the coffee. But when I cut that out and it didn’t improve, I thought, ‘All right, I better get this checked out’,” he told People in an earlier interview.<\/p>\n Following a colonoscopy, he believed everything had gone smoothly and was utterly blindsided by the devastating diagnosis.<\/p>\n “Then the gastroenterologist said – in his most pleasant bedside manner – that it was cancer. I think I went into shock,” he recalled. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider because I wasn’t working.”<\/p>\n James Kinross, a Colorectal Surgeon at the independent charitable hospital King Edward VII’s Hospital, has outlined six warning signs that could indicate bowel cancer.<\/p>\n Be aware of your bathroom routine<\/p>\n A notable change in your toilet habits could be a potential warning sign of bowel cancer, and this varies between individuals. This might include going to the toilet more frequently than usual, or experiencing looser, more liquid stools.<\/p>\n Your bowel movements might also appear thinner than normal. Typically, your GP will request a stool sample and conduct a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) to detect any hidden blood.<\/p>\n This helps determine whether further investigation for potential bowel cancer or another condition is necessary.<\/p>\n Abdominal pain<\/p>\n Ongoing abdominal pain, cramping, or discomfort, especially when combined with bloating, might indicate bowel cancer. While this is often benign, it could suggest a malignant growth.<\/p>\n Therefore, any new lumps or those that have grown larger should always be examined by your GP.<\/p>\n Fatigue or Weakness<\/p>\n Ongoing tiredness or weakness that fails to improve despite adequate rest might be a symptom of bowel cancer, particularly when present alongside other signs such as abdominal discomfort or unexpected weight loss.<\/p>\n If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, particularly if they continue or get worse, it’s vital to seek advice from a healthcare professional for proper assessment and diagnosis.<\/p>\n The primary signs of bowel cancer (affecting both the colon and rectum) typically involve persistent changes lasting 3 weeks or longer.<\/p>\n Key Symptoms to Monitor<\/p>\n Changes in your Bowel Habits: This could mean experiencing looser stools, diarrhoea, or constipation that’s unusual for you. You may also notice you’re going to the toilet more or less frequently than normal.<\/p>\n Blood in your Stools: You may spot bright red blood or notice dark, tar-like stools.
