But it\u2019s not true. Although Marvel had established that superhero in 1963, Sabbath bassist <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/geezer-butler-interview\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/geezer-butler-interview\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/features\/geezer-butler-interview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Geezer Butler<\/a>, who wrote the lyrics for the iconic song, had never even heard of him in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents never let me read American comics when I was growing up,\u201d says Butler. \u201cI knew about Batman and Superman, but that\u2019s about it. For me it was all about the Beano and the Dandy.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"30a1d5c0-d381-42fd-a541-2e08348dca6c-2\">\u201cSo whenever someone\u2019s said to me over the years: \u2018Oh, didn\u2019t you write this about the superhero?\u2019, I\u2019d just say: \u2018Sorry, never heard of him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>The idea for the song, which first appeared on the second Sabbath album, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/black-sabbath-paranoid-story-behind-album\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/black-sabbath-paranoid-story-behind-album\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/bands-artists\/black-sabbath-paranoid-story-behind-album\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paranoid<\/a>, released in 1970, actually started with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/every-ozzy-osbourne-solo-album-ranked\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/every-ozzy-osbourne-solo-album-ranked\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.loudersound.com\/music\/albums\/every-ozzy-osbourne-solo-album-ranked\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t exactly recall what Ozzy said, but it was something like: \u2018Why don\u2019t we do a song called Iron Man, or maybe Iron Bloke\u2019. That got me thinking about a lump of metal, and then putting it all into a science-fiction context. It\u2019s about a man who goes into the future and witnesses the apocalypse. Going back to his own time, he encounters a rogue magnetic field, which turns him into a mute, steel creature.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to talk, he still tries to warn people about the impending end of the world, but is only mocked for his troubles. Angry and bitter, he eventually causes the devastation he\u2019d warned everyone about. Ultimately the would-be hero becomes the villain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up below to get the latest from Classic Rock, plus exclusive special offers, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was heavily into science fiction at the time,\u201d Butler recalls of more than 40 years ago. \u201cRemember, this was the era of the space race. A lot of the stuff I was writing about was inspired by those sorts of stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fascinated by what might happen to a man who\u2019s suddenly transformed into a metal being. He still has a human brain, and wants to do the right thing, but eventually his own frustrations at the way humanity treats him drives this creature to taking extreme action. It was also an era when the whole issue of pollution was starting to get attention, and this affected my thinking quite a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Ozzy said something like: \u2018Why don\u2019t we do a song called Iron Man, or maybe Iron Bloke.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Geezer Butler<\/p>\n<p id=\"c59f5ce8-cf79-463b-82ce-64520cf6a1c5\">Sabbath drummer Bill Ward reckons that, musically, the song was nothing like anything else the band had done up to that point: \u201cFor me, this is a special song for the band. It was just so different. As soon as you hear that ominous start, you know something\u2019s building. For me, the drumming was a real challenge to get right in the studio. But it\u2019s also a drummer\u2019s dream to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnically, we had real problems getting it right in the studio,\u201d Ward recalls. \u201cThe trouble was that the microphones available to us in 1970 just weren\u2019t up to the task of capturing the power and depth of the sound. I played very loud back then, and wanted a powerful bass drum sound; that\u2019s what the song needed. Yet all I could get was a dull thud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Rodger [Bain, producer] and Tom [Allom, engineer], trying to make Iron Man work was so tough. In the end they did an excellent job under the circumstances. For Geezer Butler, it is perhaps the track that bests sums up the band.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really do feel that when you listen to Iron Man, what you\u2019re getting is the essence of what made Black Sabbath such a special band,\u201d he offers. \u201cIt\u2019s fairly simple, yet also has a lot of depth. I\u2019m very proud of what we achieved here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bill Ward believes that the song\u2019s stature has grown over the years, to the point where it has now gone beyond being just <br \/>a great Sabbath song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn America, if you go to most sports events you\u2019ll hear it at some point. It\u2019s now a part of the culture of the country. People recognise it as soon as it starts up. It\u2019s very musical, but also so theatrical. I think its popularity now is such that, in a way, it no longer belongs to Ozzy, Geezer, Tony [Iommi] and me, it\u2019s now everyone\u2019s song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2008, Iron Man received another boost when it was included in the movie of the same name, based on the Marvel Comics creation. So, here we go again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sabbath released Iron Man as a single in 1971. Although it reached No.52 in America, nine places higher than Paranoid, in the UK it make no impact at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it worked best at the time in the context of the album,\u201d Ward says. \u201cWe never thought of ourselves as a singles band anyway. But over the years, Iron Man has grown and grown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we believed at the time that it would turn out to be so special.
