{"id":297923,"date":"2026-02-14T15:07:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T15:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/297923\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T15:07:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T15:07:08","slug":"met-eireann-issues-status-yellow-rain-snow-warning-for-eight-counties-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/297923\/","title":{"rendered":"Met \u00c9ireann issues status yellow rain\/snow warning for eight counties \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Weather warnings of heavy rain and snow have taken effect from midday on Saturday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/met-eireann\/\">Met Eireann<\/a> has said rain which will be heavy at times and turning to sleet or snow, accompanied by strong winds, will grip the northwest until midnight. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Connacht as well as counties Donegal, Cavan and Longford will be affected. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Elsewhere, the forecaster said \u201cwintry\u201d conditions, including sleet, snow and hail, are expected across the coming days, while further flooding is possible early next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Following a \u201cvery cold\u201d Friday night, widespread frost and icy patches are expected on Saturday morning as a nationwide status yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in effect until 10am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">After a cold but dry start to the day, rain is predicted to spread over the country towards the northeast throughout the afternoon and evening, turning heavy in parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">With afternoon highs of 2 to 5 degrees, there could be sleet or wet snow for a time, mainly in Connacht and then in Ulster, the forecaster said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Connacht, alongside counties Cavan, Donegal and Longford, fall under a yellow rain and snow warning from midday on Saturday until midnight Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Counties Cork and Kerry, meanwhile, are to come under a status yellow rain alert during the same period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Temperatures are expected to dip to between 0 and 5 degrees on Saturday night, which is set to be \u201cwet and windy\u201d, with heavy rain and some sleet and snow expected in the north and east for a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Sunny spells and some heavy showers are expected on Sunday, alongside a chance of hail and \u201cperhaps an isolated thunderstorm in coastal parts\u201d amid highs of 7 to 11 degrees, Met \u00c9ireann said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Scattered \u201cblustery\u201d showers are expected to continue into Sunday night, some of which will be heavy and of hail, and occasionally merging to longer spells of rain in the north and west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/life-style\/gardening\/2026\/02\/12\/is-your-garden-waterlogged-after-the-endless-rain-heres-what-to-do\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is your garden waterlogged after the endless rain? Here\u2019s what to doOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Temperatures are expected to fall to lows of between 1 and 5 degrees on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Blustery showers are likely to continue on Monday, with further spells of hail possible, though there will be sunny spells too amid highs of 6 to 10 degrees, Met \u00c9ireann said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">However, lows of between \u22123 and 3 degrees are expected on Monday night, which is set to be largely dry with clear spells, apart from a few isolated showers in the north and west, the forecaster added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">It will be coldest in the east and north, with some frost and icy patches likely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">These patches will clear on Tuesday as wet and windy weather is set to extend nationwide by the afternoon, possibly resulting in spot flooding and some sleet and snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">A chance of spot flooding will continue into Wednesday, the forecaster said, as current indications suggest further outbreaks of rain will move in from the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Beyond Wednesday, Met \u00c9ireann said a \u201cmobile Atlantic regime\u201d will maintain generally unsettled conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">Meanwhile, Met \u00c9ireann confirmed its weather radar at Dublin Airport has been offline since Wednesday due to a \u201ctechnical issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">\u201cWhile the rainfall radar service in the east of the country is impacted, Met \u00c9ireann\u2019s forecasting capabilities continue with data from multiple observations sources including other weather radar operating in Ireland and the UK, satellite imagery and weather reports from ground stations nationwide,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph free \">It added that its radar team is working to resolve the issue \u201cas quickly as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Weather warnings of heavy rain and snow have taken effect from midday on Saturday.
